And did removing fixed volume solved it for you?

I didn't try it with variable volume, because I would've had to turn my preamp/dac up to 100%. I ditched the idea of using an external DAC. My Emotiva preamp has an AD1955 DAC chip. That's probably not any better than the ESS in the Ultra. I've also been following this thread, which might be of interest to you.

I have a new Ultra that I’m running through an external DAC through USB. The volume is extremely low. If I use the internal DAC and use line out, the volume is fine. I’ve tested the DAC with another cable, etc, and it seems fine. My WiiM volume is set to 100% and I can find no other settings that might affect the volume through USB. Any ideas? Thanks!

Depends on the scenario. It's fine if you want to achieve bitperfectness, but you should consider disabling it if you use DSP.
