My thoughts on the Vibelink Amp

It seems that some people are upset to discover that ASR review has more like 70W under 8ohm than the 100W announced by "Wiim marketing"....
I'm one of those who raised concerns about this on ASR. And as someone who has an Ultra and was/is seriously considering getting a vibelink as an upgrade on my current amp (used, 45w NAD), I think it's a legitimate concern considering I would seem to be one of the main groups of consumers that WiiM is targeting with the vibelink.

As far as I'm aware, WiiM don't have a known history of exaggerating the power of their amps, so I don't understand why they would do so with the vibelink. So, I'm hoping it is either a measurement issue in the ASR test, or something that I am misunderstanding because to be blunt, if this isn't a genuine 100w/8ohm amp then I will be far less likely to buy one. They are going to be $599 here in AU and the value proposition just won't be there compared to other, more powerful amps (both class D and A/B) in that price range.

Some of the subjective opinions expressed in this thread might be of interest too

There were some pretty precise explanations here and on asr to explain the wiim announcements to you... ( kyuu in asr and dominkz here)
invites you as already said to rather consider a 70w... (conservative stance for dominikz... ;-) )
what seems to be a sensitive matter for you of watt/price is really a shame.... ;-)
(The two things to consider here would be the impedance curve of your speakers ... the chance to be able to relieve your speakers thanks to the ultra and its high-pass low-pass... and their consumption)
;-)

Today I have the Wiim Ultra, a Rega P3 turntable and the Rega Fono MKII photno amp and a Marantz CD Player.
I use my Audiolab 6000A as a Power Amp plus a subwoofer plugged into the Ultra.
I like the Vibelink form factor that match the ultra.
I plan to plug the ultra to the Vibelink with a digital output, use the other digital input of the vibelink for the CD player, and the analog input for the rega phono preamp.
But is there a way to keep the subwoofer in this setup (no subwoofer out in the Vibelink that match the volume pot of the vibelink.
best regards

Short answer: No.

The subwoofer output must be controlled by the same device controlling the "master" volume.

Also, the Vibelink Amp does not support remote volume control, in case this is of concern to you. You could just drop-in replace the 6000A.

I'm sure the Vibelink is a great amp, better chipset, etc... but why not put a streamer in it, there is already a great DAC inside. I don't need to buy another box with another DAC (ultra) or even a mini just to stream Tidal or Radio Paradise in FLAC. I was hoping the new amp would have the same features as the Wiim Amp Pro, only better. I will wait for the spec upgrade in the Wiim Amp product line. The Wiim software is so much better than anything out there, you should put it in every box you make.

I am sure it will happen in the near future, but it has only been six months since Amp pro was launched🙂

I also noticed I don’t have to turn my volume up on my ultra as high with the vibelink compared to my Sony receiver to get the same level of loudness.

A Vibelink Amp with integrated streamer but no remote and app support? Why?

What exactly are you missing on the WiiM Amp Pro?

The only thing I wanted was a pure power amplifier, without volume control, without display, without dac. 100 watt rms on 8 ohms with a one power switch and a trigger on the back.

Aesthetics at the height of the ultra, this is missing in the wiim offer, I don't understand this proposal of products that compete with each other.

Why would an Ultra owner want an amplifier with identical streaming functions (Amp pro) or an amplifier with another dac that is practically the same (Vibelink)?

Isn't Ultra already considered an excellent preamp, an excellent streamer with an excellent dac?

I wouldn't call it excellent in any of these categories.

It's up to the user what to do with the DAC in the amp. A digital connection between components has some advantages over the analog connection.

You don't always get what you want in life, do you? Is there any real benefit to not having the choice between analogue and digital input (except for an assumed lower price, which is rather marginal in absolute numbers)?

The WiiM Amp Pro has never been suggested as a partner for the Ultra by WiiM or anyone in it's right mind. Technically, it's possible to combine them, of course.

The WiiM Vibelink Amp is totally different from the WiiM Amp Pro. It's the power amplification part needed to use the Ultra with passive loudspeakers, with some bonus features. Consequently, I absolutely do see WiiM Ultra owners being interested in the Vibelink Amp. If it's not for you, that's fine. It's your choice. But the digital inputs also make the Vibelink Amp an interesting match for the other WiiM streamers. All this in just one device, at the cost of loosing buyers like you who cannot get over the slightly better spec DAC chip in the Vibelink Amp.

The net sum appears to be positive.
