New Wiim Ultra - can't connect to music files on server

My new Wiim Ultra connects to my Arcam processor via line out RCA.
Both the Wiim and my server (UnRAID) are connected to the sanme network using Ethernet. However, using the Wiim Home App, and attempting to point the Wiim at my music drives, (using either //Server/Music or //192.168.1.6/Music), the connection fails every time. Not exactly the "out of box experience" I was hoping for, but it's difficult to know where to start looking.
Question 1 - Can anyone help resolve this issue?

FWIW, the server shares are available via SMB, and the Wiim is the first device I'd had that can't seem to connect. Connection to Ethernet for the Wiim is done via DHCP, but the server has a static IP address.

This is the main question I'm looking for help with, but....

I also have a follow-up question.

Assuming I can connect to the server, and I can see the music folder on the Wiim, what is it like navigating the Artist/Album sub-folders on the Wiim? I did a quick search of this forum earlier, and found several posts mentioning that the Wiim really needs a music server software layer working to improve the experience. I wasn't aware of this and it's a little disappointing as using the Wiim as the main music playback device in our lounge was, by far, the biggest use-case for us. So really, the question is - does the Wiim Ultra need some music server software running to have an 'improved' end-user experience? I've seen people refer to "minimserver" (which won't run on UnRAID), and "roon" (which will run on UnRAID, but is a LOT more expensive), and "plex", as examples of music server software.

Question 2 - Is using music server software the best way of playing music stored on my server through the Wiim Ultra, or can it do it just fine without?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/advice.

Welcome.

The wiim support page on smb gives examples using backslashes rather than forward slashes.
Maybe just 'cos it's possibly Windows they are accessing though...
Worth a shot?

2nd question - if you are happy with what smb provides then it's fine!
e.g. if you just navigate to a folder to play an album then it'll suffice.
If you want to search etc. then a media server is definitely recommended.

Hi Mr Ee,
I did use backslashes in the server address. I also checked out the Wiim Support pages you mention, but was only able to confirm that I did everything correctly. There must be something else wrong. The other devices that connect to the server without issue are R_volution media players and, before them, Zappiti media players. Not music players for sure, but not running Windows either. I've ended up raising a support ticket.

2nd Question - I have a feeling I won't be satisfied with what smb provides, but I need to GET to that place (successful connection to music folder on server) before I can make that call. Thanks for your help!

Hi Slartibartfast,

I will definitely check out Lyrion. I see that someone in the UnRAID community has developed what looks like a docker for LyrionMusicServer for UnRAID which is a very good start.

Do you know whether Lyrion supports higher resolution FLAC files? - 24/96, 24/192? 2 channel only of course.

Yes it supports 24/96 and 24/192 👍

Awesome! Sounds like Lyrion will do nicely.

Now...to get this connection issue fixed...
With Lyrion you wouldn't need to connect the WiiM Home App to your music storage location. Just enable Squeezelite on the WiiM and it will.appear as a player in Lyrion.

Wow! It's taking me a moment for that to sink in! It does raise some further questions though...

1. Can you tell me HOW to enable Squeezelite on the WiiM, or point me to where I can find instructions?

2. If the WiiM Home app can't see the server, how do you browse/select music from the music collection?

1. Can you tell me HOW to enable Squeezelite on the WiiM,

On the Devices page click on the Gear icon, then look under Voice and Streaming>Squeezelite:

Hi Erebus,
Thanks for that. Looks like it is enabled by default. Now I just need the answer to question2 to know where to go next.

Thanks!

You'd effectively use Lyrion to "push" music to the wiim rather than the wiim home app to "pull" music.
i.e. access Lyrion as a web page on your device and choose the wiim as the target, similar to spotify connect, tidal connect etc.
Enable the Material Skin in Lyrion's options.

Hi Erebus & Mr Ee.

My apologies. You both answered my question - I guess I was too tired to read it correctly. Again, I'm sorry for that...

...and it also appears I've not provided the context to get the best solution for me. I'll add that now - I think it changes things.

I'm currently using the WiiM Home app to get up and running, but once that's done I'd prefer not to use the Home app at all. My system is all connected and run by a Control4 automation system. Once the WiiM was working I was going to get my Control4 guy to add the WiiM driver to my system and then I could happily control it using my current Control4 remote.

Like most things I'm encountering lately - it's not that simple.

It's sounding like getting the WiiM connected to my music via the SMB shares is NOT going to give me a great user experience (and I'm not even at the start line yet - still can't connect via the Home app).

It sounds like - the only way I'm going to get a great user experience is to run a good music server software on my server - one that supports the WiiM Ultra, can run on UnRAID AND can play nicely with Control4. It sounds like I can manage my music using Lyrion using a web browser to connect - and it's very useful to have that - but in the room I need to control and navigate my music using the Control4 remote. That's the last piece missing from my situation.

A couple of years ago I suffered a spinal stroke and lost function in my hands. The Control4 remote works for me, but navigating a phone or tablet in the room (which it sounds like I'd need to do using the Lyrion music server) is something I was hoping to avoid. I can use a tablet and phone, but it's a cumbersome experience. I did a search online and it looks like Lyrion doesn't have a Control4 driver, which is a shame as it seems to do everything else I need it to do.

So, where's all this going? Effectively, I need a music server software package that can talk to the WiiM Ultra, supports FLAC high resolution audio files up to 24/192, can be installed on UnRAID, AND has a Control4 driver...and that's hopefully less expensive than ROON.

Now that I'm able to see the whole picture more clearly, I think that what I just described is what I need. If I'd known up front how complex all this is I would've taken more time and maybe made some better decisions.

Sorry I didn't give the complete picture earlier - I guess I've learned now what it's going to take to get the best out of my WiiM Ultra, and that knowledge I only gained after I'd asked my initial question.

Music Server needs:
  • Can communicate with WiiM Ultra
  • Supports high resolution FLAC files
  • Can be installed on UnRAID server
  • Can talk to Control4 (Control4 driver)
Thanks for all your help and direction - and if you know of a solution that meets all the requirements, I'm all ears!

Here is an old thread from the C4 forum. There maybe hope.

Use the Wiim app to do inital setup of the box, and room correction and for music playback use craig drummonds LMS app

Recommend using the artist info plugin, upnp plugin, album art downloader, lyrics, material skin

The discussion has moved past the questions of UnRaid SMB Connectivity, but... The issue experienced is likely one of UnRaid supporting only SMB2/SMB3 while most older Devices expecting connections be via the deprecated SMB1 protocol.
