Surely all CD players/transports have gapless playback?

They all do except the Tangent CDII. That's why they explicitly mention gapless playback for the CD III as an upgrade. It says more about Tangent than CD players in general

There are more modern/recent "cd players" using computer cd/dvd drives that can't do gapless, from SMSL for instance. It's a deviation from the decades old red-book cd standard. Pretty useless really...

No they’re not all capable of gapless playback. I was surprised too.

Not really, there are several manufacturers out there making CD player that do not do gapless playback.
