Oversampling issue

Hi,

I have a weird problem with my Pro. My CD player is connected to Pro with toslink and Pro to preamp also with toslink. When I play music from the player through Wiim, my preamp shows sample frequency as 48kHz, even though oversampling is turned off from settings. Sound is also very different compared to original sample rate. If I use fixed 44.1kHz sample rate, preamp shows the same and sound is also the same as original.

Any tips, what could be the cause?

Hi,

The player itself is non-oversampling, only 44.1kHz digital outputs. Cambridge Audio 540C V2. That's why this problem has to be on the Wiim's end.

So, do you normally have fixed sample rate enabled or disabled on the pro? It should be disabled, but the sample rate and bit depth should be set to the maximum supported by your DAC/pre-amp.

Oversampling and re-sampling are different things. Oversampling is done by the DAC itself. You're not even using the SAC inside your CD player, so it doesn't matter if it does or doesn't do oversampling.

The optical output of your 540C V2 should be 44.1 kHz, indeed, so the most likely reason would be the WiiM Pro upsampling everything to 48 kHz. That's exactly what happens if you enable fixed resolution and set the sample frequency to 48 kHz. If fixed resolution is not enabled but the DAC/pre-amp still shows 48 kHz, things are getting more complicated.

I have always used variable rate with max settings, was just testing the fixed for this issue.

And yes, I know that output from the player is 16/44.1, which makes this really annoying because the sound quality suffers when Wiim upsamples/re-samples or whatever to 48kHz.

And just to be perfectly clear, when you connect your CD player directly to your DAC/pre-amp, does it really display 44.1 kHz?

Yes, it really does.
Send feedback to WiiM directly from within the WiiM Home App (tab "More..." => "Feedback and Tickets"). Device logs will be included automatically with your description.

The WiiM Pro is not expected to upsample anything, unless fixed output resolution is enabled.

I already did that, was just hoping someone had some idea of the cause.
