Playback screen options on Ultra

Can anyone shed any light on this?

I have the WiiM Home app installed on two iPad Airs. One is a 1st gen from, iirc, 2013, the other a 4th gen iPad Air from 2020. The 1st gen one stopped receiving/being able to receive iOS updates years ago. I use it exclusively for the Bandcamp app, the BBC sounds app & the aforementioned WiiM Home app, however, in the WiiM app it gives me 10 (count them. 10!) different playback screen options, including 4 differently coloured VU meters (I chose the rather fetching blue variety) and two VU meter modes: ‘output amplitude’ & ‘original signal). Yet on the 4th gen iPad Air I only have the option of four playback screens, only one of which is a VU meter albeit it is the blue one, and no VU meter modes. Both iPads have the latest WiiM Home updates.

That's a bit of a ball-ache tbh. You're just going to have to take my word for it that, as I stated in my original post, they both have the latest and identical version of the app.

Good luck with other members owning iPads are more helpful.

Generally speaking, you might want to send feedback to WiiM directly through the WiiM Home app. Tap on More, then Feedback. Device logs will be send along, so WiiM might be able to identify any issues.

Thanks man, good advice, although in all honesty my curiosity extends only so far as, 'oh, that's a trifle odd, I wonder if anyone knows what that's about', or indeed if anyone has experienced similar, it's not affecting my use or enjoyment of the Ultra, per se. My bafflement mainly lies in the fact that it's the ancient, never-to-be-updated-further iPad that offers up all the extra options rather than the newish one that still receives ios updates, however, I'm happy to let it remain yet another of life's many and varied mysteries. I am, after all, but an 'umble excresence. Nice one.

If the display size or text size is changed on a tablet, the layout of the app may change. (At least, they used to have this problem.)

This may not be related to your problem, but please check the size settings in the tablet.

Note that I don't have an iOS device so I don't know any more than this...

Funnily enough, how the app itself is displayed is also slightly different on each of the ipads, for instance on one of them the 'browse' 'devices' and other tabs are at the top of the screen in a grey box, yet on the other they are at the bottom of the screen but not with a grey background. I've yet to check my android phone to see what the playback screen options are. I get what you're saying regarding differing display and font size on the respective tablets but both of those are also identical within the actual wiim app itself, and the wildly different playback screen options are indicative of something unrelated to either of those things, but like I say, it's really not an issue, and as you rightly pointed out maybe other owners with apple products will respond.

It's late - im in the UK - and I really can't be arsed schlepping to my front room to get the ipads, not least because I also can't face waking up my cat and my dog who are nicely settled in beside me and will then get under my feet and try to steer me towards the fridge for treats. Suffice to say the very first thing, literally the first thing I did before posting my original request, was check they each have the very latest and identically numbered updates. But thank you for offering to help try and get to the bottom of it, it's genuinely appreciated and I'll try and find the time tomorrow to post pics showing the various differences and the identical update numbers.

Ok, I hold my hands up and admit it, I’m a dick! Bang to rights. Guilty M’lud etc etc. So… ahem… it turns out the two iPads are running different versions of the app, dagnabit! The old iPad has version 3.2.4.25061817, but this newer iPad I hold in my hands now, as I type, has app version 3.2.3.25053015

It transpires that while I confidently stated that the first thing I checked was to make sure both iPads were running the same app, what I’d actually checked was the ‘Firmware Updates’ rather than ‘App Version’.

So, there you go. However, this only deepens the mystery - to paraphrase Churchill ‘The WiiM Ultra’s app update schedule is a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma’. Why has the older iPad got the newer, better version of the app? It doesn’t receive Apple updates, it cannot run YouTube. It cant even handle the Guardian newspaper app or its desktop site. Yet it has a newer, better version of the WiiM app, one that my current, fully up to date and fully functioning iPad does not have. This is traumatic and may require the cure-all of purchasing some form of audio equipment that I do not entirely need but would like. Maybe some KT150 valves to replace the nearly new and perfectly adequate KT120’s that I’m currently using, or a massive tranche of secondhand cd’s.
