A 4th order crossover like the one thats already used in the Ultra for subwoofer and the main speakers are good, but a better power respons in the room below the transition area can be had with an odd order crossover like a 5th order low and highpass filter. Thats 30dB/oct slopes.
If the main speakers are closed , they roll off naturally in the base with about 12dB/oct below the loudspeakers resonans frequency.
In such a system, best sound can be had with a 18dB/oct high pass crossover and 30dB/oct low pass filter for the subwoofer. The result will be 30/30 - acoustically.
So, I would wish a switchable crossover for the ultra that is:
1. 24/24 Linkwitz riley ( as it is now )
2. 30LP/18HP for users with closed main speakers. - gives better power response in the room than 24/24.
3. 30LP/30HP. - gives better power response in the room than 24/24.
4. A THX crossover - 24LP/12HP crossover ( for movie lovers that uses closed main speakers.) - the same as all hometheatre receivers uses.
5. 36/36 crossover - for users that wants a steeper crossover.
Can this be done, ? I would be very happy.
