Setting up my 5.1 (4.1 really) correctly.

So, I bought a couple of Wiim Amp Ultras last week and I have one in my living room for TV and movies as well as music.

My previous setup was a Sonos Amp, which had two play 1s as the surrounds.

In the sonos app I was able to specify that I wanted the surround speakers to be off when the input was streaming music and standard volume for when audio was playing via arc.

How do I do this in the Wiim app?

Basically I want to make sure I get stereo with sub for music and surround for TV/movis

How do you plan to integrate your surround speakers in the first place?
I don‘t think you can pair Sonos speakers with a WiiM.
Oh I forgot half of the info.

I bought a Wiim amp normal and some passive surround speakers. :)

I have it chained and I get audio from the right channels etc.

I am just wondering how I tell it when I want to use only the front speakers and sub (i.e. for music) and the 4.1 setup for movies and TV.

Hi,
Please refer to this guide first.

Here's a brief explanation.
Link two Amp Ultra units via the WiiM app to form a group. Tap the link icon in the top-right corner of the device card for the WiiM connected to your TV to create the group.

Play Dolby 5.1ch video on your TV.

When you open the WiiM app's playback screen during playback, the 5.1 icon will be displayed.

On the next screen, enabling Dolby will configure the WiiM devices linked to the group as surround speakers.

When listening to music, either mute the WiiM device designated for surround sound. Or unlink them from the group. In this case, creating a group again and playing a 5.1ch source will automatically reconfigure the surround group.

You can also create permanent groups.

Currently, manual switching is required, but once the 'Input Sound Profile' feature, currently in beta testing on Ultra, is added in the future, group switching will occur automatically alongside input switching.

Should you have any further questions, please don't hesitate to ask.

Thanks. Yeah I followed the guide and was able to get Dolby digital.

It sounds like the input sound profile feature is what I need. Perfect. Thanks for confirming that the feature is on its way!

Don’t suppose any roadmap exists where I can check when the functionality is planned to be available? Or can I easily join the beta testers for this feature?

@andrewmalpass
Unfortunately, the beta firmware is currently only available for the WiiM Ultra. It is not available for the Amp Ultra.
I found a temporary workaround. Turn the audio input pre gain all the way down on Wi-fi input on the surround amp only.

Granted, if I watch a music video I will get matrixed stereo to the surrounds, but I don't mind that.

I have a question.

When I chain the Wiim amp that is connected to the surround speakers, is the system smart enough to send the surround audio under the crossover frequency of the Wiim amp ultra (that is connected to the front speakers and sub) to the sub?

I think so.
The WiiM should be capable of producing audio output compliant with the Dolby Digital standard.

@Wiimer - am I misremembering that I managed to setup a 5.1 surround group from an optical as well as HDMI ARC input? When I feed my Ultra with a DD5.1 signal it shows the same audio info, but no option to create a 5.1 system. What magic sauce does an HDMI feed have that optical doesn't?

Yes, I recall that too. I couldn't confirm it on the Ultra, but I did on the Amp Ultra.

The 5.1ch icon appears on the Optical input. However, I tried several 5.1ch titles on Netflix, and some played back in PCM..

E.g., Dogman could not be played back in 5.1ch. 🤔

Thanks, I’m not going mad after all 😜🤣

I’ve asked WiiM for clarification too 👍
Just double checked it after wiring up my ultra to my tv over optical, and grouping it with the WiiM sound for centre and a WiiM pro for rears and it works fine, although I may need to play around with my tv and fire stick settings for lip sync.
