I am a long time fan of AKM, also of well done ladder DACs but did have one ESS I liked, the Oppo BD83 SE with upgraded DAC section, many years ago, I used it for a very long time but needed to downsize the BD player to fit better into our full time RV remodel. It was the only ESS I ever really liked, forget the chip(s) model now but it was their highest end ones at the time.
That player cost about $1k way back then and worth it. Oppo sold player internals or possible whole players, to high end audio manf that sold it for $3-5k but was the same exact thing inside.
I recently sold it to a collector, he really wanted it and paid me a decent price for it.
