utilizing the HDMI ARC input for digital PC audio output

There is an option in the Home App, under Audio input called "Auto-sensing of HDMI" that you can toggle on/off, so I would expect that to work.

i'm afraid (for me) it doesn't. I have a CD player connected on the HDMI ARC as transport, the Ultra doesn't detect when it's starting to play, no matter what i tried options wise

Well in the worst case I can set the HDMI input as a preset on the WiiM remote

A CD player with ARC out. What model is that?

HDMI ARC output is usually only found on TVs.

i meant, a CD player connected to the Ultra's HDMI ARC input (but you probably already knew that), using the Sonos adapter discussed above

Got my Sonos dongle and tested today, it works, however, HDMI auto-sensing is not working as mentioned here.
I've sent feedback via the WiiM Home app, hopefully this is something that can be fixed/adjusted.

the fact this cheap small adapter actually works with standard optical signal to the WiiM's HDMI ARC input, is a "technical miracle" by itself. I seriously doubt the auto sensing would get "fixed" somehow

Yes I doubt it as well, but it's better to try than give up immediately.
