Not necessarily. AirPlay to a WiiM device that supports it can be lossless CD quality.

From that you’ll see there are instances where AirPlay 2 can deliver lossless audio, not just 256kbps AAC.

My understanding is that WiiM Pro/Plus are AirPlay 2 devices and since they are outside the Apple ecosystem, they receive AirPlay 2 at AAC 256.

To be clear, WiiM devices don’t send AirPlay at all, they’re receivers not transmitters.

If you use the Apple Music app, then yes it will get sent to AirPlay compatible WiiM devices at 256kbps. However, airplaying from Qobuz for example is sent as lossless CD quality - see this screenshot:

And for comparison, here’s a 24/192 ALAC file being sent from the iPadOS Music app over AirPlay 2 which, as you say, is sent as 256kbps AAC

They don't send through AirPlay 2, they can receive from AirPlay or AirPlay 2 senders.

Is that unique to Qubuz? I tested with Tidal and it airplayed at 256.

No, just tried it from Amazon Music unlimited and it appears to be lossless CD quality as well.

You’d probably use Qobuz Connect, Tidal Connect or Amazon Music Alexacast to your WiiM to get full bit perfect 24/192 and totally avoid AirPlay anyway.
