WiiM Ultra Firmware v5.2.709956 - Mar 6, 2025

Audio measurements seen online may or may not be complete, but well-executed controlled listening tests IME tell a pretty convincing story. :)

If anyone can demonstrate in such a test that EMI from DSP/screen in WiiM Ultra causes audible issues, I'd be very intrigued to read the report!

Until such time, I'm happy to wait and see what kind of exciting new EMI-ridden features @WiiM Team can cram inside these lovely devices! 🤪
the observation of degradations, even with classic audio measurement, due to the presence of a screen is a great classic which explains the interest of an on off mode if the screen is not so necessary (moreover onlyoneme had also observed it here with the ultra from memory)

is often observed in silence tests... it s dirty...( somes times is just the dimming of screen etc )
;-)
ps I don't have an ultra and therefore can't observe it... maybe not the case in this specific case... (also to observe in phono input at high gain etc often interesting)

The switch between the input and output measures works for me with latest versions. The switch do however break the VU meter functionality and the volume displayed is completely wrong. As some has noted; the needle stay all the way to the right (above +10 dB).
The switch may be working for me, in that I’m able to select either option, but it has no effect on the “VU Meter” operation appearance.

I don’t have the needle at the right (above +10 db) that you mentioned, it just behaves exactly the same whichever option is selected, and is currently fluctuating at around the -20 db mark.

I have just tested it again and after a reboot it looks ok for output (still wrong values but in the correct interval).

When switching to source nothing happens until I change input (e.g. to TV). After that the needle stay on the right around or above +10 dB, even when going back to output.

With output selected again I can get down to -10 dB if I set volume to 2%. The correct max value is -34 dB.

dB = log10(volume%/100).

So I think it is implemented by latest releases but it doesn't work correctly.

PS: When changing source the needle freeze on the last position even though there is no signal.

Hi Team, In my Ultra, when I change the VU meter mode to 'original signal' nothing happening .
After a change of output volume the the VU meter works fine, but when I set the mode back to 'output amplitude' the Ultra ignores the setting.
Change the output volume has not effect.
When I reboot the Ultra, the VU meters work as expected.

Hi etoninolo,

Sorry for the inconvenience! There is an issue in the latest firmware affecting VU meter mode. The selected mode does not work unless the device volume is changed. This issue will be fixed in the next firmware update.

Starting with the most recent FW update, the Ultra screen turns itself on briefly when a new album is started. Even though I have both playing and standby screens set off.

Reported to @WiiM Support. Case #527894.

Bug confirmed by WiiM. Reply to my feedback:

“The issue you're experiencing is related to changes made in the latest firmware update. We will be addressing this behavior and improving it in the next firmware update.”

Hmm. Seems to be many new issues in latest firmware. Wondering if @WiiM Team has skipped some regression testing?

I have to agree. I tried the 2 new coloured VU meters and really like the cream coloured background, but unfortunately it is not viewable at a few meters distance away. Perhaps for a desktop/near field application it works.

It would be better if the needle and readings were bold/thicker. The original colour scheme is the most readable so I've reverted back to this.

However, and I know it's been mentioned a few times already, but a digital VU meter or spectrum analyzer would have been a better addition..
I was thinking about a simple but interesting VU meter like this.

The actual dBFS value is shown on the right and the values is scrolling to the left. A bit like an oscilloscope. The meter shall of cause have proper scales.

I think it would fit the Ultra and would be both useful and nice?

+1, same behavior with my Ultra. I'm using fixed line out (no volume control).

I don't understand this, I use Ethernet as the source input. Do I need to toggle both that and the volume control?
No. Change the VU meter settings to show the source (any input), then change the volume. You will see that the VU meter now is around +10 dB or above. After that you cannot change back.

That is at least how it works for me.

My vu meter is always spiking in the red, when i changed it to the white version

Anyone noticed that replay gain feature ceased to work after this update.
It still is available in wiim app (disable, track gain and album gain) but whatever you choose there's no perceived sound volume changes (tried with several albums).

Hi there,

Please send us a feedback ticket through the WiiM Home App so we can investigate the issue for you. Also, to ensure Replay Gain works correctly, your music files must contain Replay Gain metadata. Thanks!

I've raised a ticket.

The files have that info. It worked before the update. Thank you.
