Hi Guys!
I bought Wiim Ultra and pair of active speakers with integrated amps.
Think to order now REL T7X subwoofer, but I found in manual that they highly recommend to connect the sub as an inactive speaker for best quality. Screenshot from manual attached.

Anyone tried to connect such sub to Wiim Ultra? Which connection method you use? How is the quality?

I’m thinking that maybe it will not perform as well as it should if just connecting through sub out on Wiim and then maybe not even worth to overpay for this nicely sounding sub and just order something a bit cheaper.

To be honest I think it is too small sub for my room (42m2) I dint feel big difference without it. Let me know about yours when it arrives.
I am sorry to hear that. My room is much smaller (14m2). Will see what happens.

Is your room measurements linear or do you have a dip also like me at 40-60hz? My main goal with a sub was to eliminate that dip…

Got it yesterday. It came with some upgraded power cable and a fuse as a bonus from the previous owner. Still playing around how to integrate it with my system, so far no success)). Without the sub my system seems to have much more base)) the RC measurements confirm that. I am planning to invite some more experienced folks to check what I am doing wrong)

How did you set the sub volume?

How did you set the sub volume?
I set the gain on the sub at 2-3 o’clock, more than half. Inside the Wiim App I set the sub gain up to +10db. Played with polarity and phase. LP filter off on the sub, and inside the app crossover set at 60hz. Connected using some cheapish 5 meter RCA cable from sub out on the Ultra to one of the LFE inputs on the sub. The sub is placed between the speakers, closer to the right one. What am I doing wrong?))

Is the sub definitely working? Can you feel the movement if you touch the rubber surrounding the driver?

Yes it is definitely working, but my main speakers are definitely louder. Should I crank the volume even higher? Don’t want ruin the sub though ))
Not sure. With my sub the volume closely matches the speakers when the sub gain is at 12 o'clock and WiiM app sub volume at 0dB. Is the sub close to a wall?

Gain stage:

In order to maximize dynamic range and minimize distortion, clipping, etc....this is the proper way to setup audio gear in the analog realm and in many cases digital as well.

Turn gain down all the way on all devices.
Turn up gain on first device in the chain to 90-95%. (higher than that is where most distortion occurs)
Go to next device and do the same.
Then third, then 4th, etc....until you get to the last stage where you adjust the gain to the level you want to play it at.

Note: An even better way, once accustomed to setting up the gain stage properly, is to adjust each stage to just below audible distortion. Even if none heard still turn it down a bit from full output.

If a device is being used to adjust the level, say a pre amp, then you still set it as high as you can then adjust the next level so that you can go as loud and soft as the range you need to cover so the last stage still should not be turned up much at all, unless needed of course.

Subs:

My preference is open baffle if I have the space to do it right but sealed can be just great, my last home system had four audiophile grade sealed 15's with a lot of quality power. I seldom used more than two and much less power, using them all was only for party time.

Ported, can be quite musical, I might build in two 15's in our now full time RV and might go ported, I can physically and electronically tune them.

I should probably just get two smaller sealed active subs, do not need the 15's but own them and love them, used many as used to be a dealer selling custom car audio systems for C5 and C6 Vettes, more hobby than business, it was fun:)

Two Subs:

Almost always better than one, if one I prefer center between speakers though less output not being in a corner thus corner loaded but much easier to tune, usually.

Four Subs:

One in each corner or as works best in the particular space, done right this can be amazing.

Horn loaded:

I came close to doing this in my last house, many years ago, but I was always out in my shop build up my next race car project...Build a huge horn in the basement, It could be anywhere from 20 to 200 or much more cubic ft in volume depending on output desired. One sub or two units so two subs passing through the floor, needs a very good sub but not exotic priced one and not a great deal of power.

-------------I really hope the fix for using the USB out to a DAC and the Sub out(wish it was stereo) to the sub amp is what I want to setup with the Ultra, only reason I want it over the Pro Plus I have, simpler is better, I will try the Ultra DAC just in case it satisfies my goals in sound quality for a budget.

My DAC: I have not used it this way yet but it has been done and seems to work great. Topping V70 Velvet, Balanced line out to mains amp(s), RCA out to sub amp as both can be used at the same time. DAC has output gain control so use as preamp. I would lose the subwoofer control of the Ultra going this route. That is why I hope they can implement the USB and Sub Out fix on it and soon:)

NOT SURE I have seen this info posted elsewhere on the site so I might edit most of this out and put it in a new thread.

He is already well past halfway on the sub gain control and +10dB in the WiiM app. Something doesn't seem right.

I was thinking more on the actual sub than the Ultra’s control.

But yes, whilst I agree it sounds strange, not trying turning the volume up if it’s too quiet, just to see if it makes a difference, is a bizarre omission.

I forgot to address it topic issue, oops!

Something not right, simple route and best in most cases if not already done, swap cables and see if a change.

If no change next easiest, if you have access to one, swap subs.

If good, bad original sub, might be an easy repair, might not be worth it.

Of course double check all the settings on the gear involved first, I for one never set something incorrectly :)

You sure you switched off filter on sub? This was my problem at first, wiim applying filter and then sub applying filter, but i havent tested it properly to tell you if there was same problem like your, just found out it was also turned on quite soon.

Could also try turn off filter on wiim and turn on on sub and check which sound better.

By the way I also needed more than half volume to start feeling that sub properly.

Hi. Thanks. The filter is off on the sub and on in the Wiim App. I wonder if grounded/isolated has anything to do with the output?

It shouldn't make a difference, but grounded mode should be the default that only needs to be changed if you encounter humming from the sub.

Settings looking good in theory on the sub and in the WiiM Home app. Except from the missing power cord, of course. ;)

As suggested before, are you sure that there really is any output from the subwoofer? Temporarily set the crossover frequency in the WiiM Home app to 250 Hz just for testing and listen again. Did you remove the grill and can actually see the cone moving?

Just to rule out the "upgraded fuse" as non-working. :)
