Qobuz Qobuz Connect released

While folks are discussing various connections aspects of Qobuz Connect via WiiM devices, thought I'd add some listening feedback.

On my tube monoblock system, it's a very nice, sizable audio improvement. I'm hearing additional depth and detail beyond any technical evaluation from albums in 192K by the Cars, Blondie to 44K recordings like Stevie Ray Vaughn Live at Carnegie Hall. Ran the room correction L/R again to capture the best match as well.

It's not only detail. It's a richer listening experience across the audio range. This is heard better on recordings such as jazz and classical. Definitely the best I've heard on Christian Sands' album, "Reach."

Will go out on a limb and say this is the best PCM performance I've gotten out of my system using the WiiM and to be fair direct from a Mac M1 Air via USB to the RME. Thank you very much Qobuz and WiiM! This is truly outstanding! YMMV

Related equipment: WiiM Pro, RME ADI-1 FS DAC, Schiit Saga+, McIntosh LS340, Richard Gray RGPC 400, 2 Cisco Meraki switches from FIOS fiber service (to the WiiM and 5v LPS, optical audio to the RME).
Both the Schiit preamp & LS340 speakers are recapped.
You’re claiming that Qobuz Connect sounds better than using the WiiM’s native Qobuz support playing the same resolution/sample rate version of the same track?

Hi Ed, - in my system this is a dramatic improvement vs. Chromecast. I've been listening to various music and it's across the board from 44K material to 192K as noted above. I've been looking forward to putting QC through its paces and it exceeded my hopes in the listed setup.

My system is quite sensitive and I was looking forward to trying the WiiM off Chromecast. It's definitely better in my setup. The only way to top it might be with HQPlayer 5 (or similar) via DSD upsampling. But frankly, I'm perfectly happy with the QC performance with the WiiM Pro and then some.

This is via the Mac OS desktop Qobuz app. On the IOS app, I see "Qobuz Connect" at the top and the ability to connect but it appears to be solely via Airplay (on the beta?) Have to learn more there and do comparisons with the WiiM app.

Update: It's late here so can't do a complete comparison between the WiiM app using Qobuz vs. the desktop Mac QC but they sound close. The updated Room Correction version with the beta firmware may have led to a different conclusion. They sound close.

Someone at Qobuz Club noticed that v9.0.0.0 removed the ability to prevent streaming over mobile and/or WiFi data channels, which will be a serious problem for some folks. If that will impact you, I'd suggest you stay on the beta app as long as you can, with the risk that it may just stop working at some point. I'm hoping Qobuz will remediate that issue ASAP.

I don't know to what extent interoperability will be affected by beta vs. release firmware on WiiM devices.
I downloaded the public Q 9.0.0.0 app and it works fine. I am now using s WiiM Pro with GA, fw and it seems to work well.

Only mishap was that, while on the road, I deleted the QC beta app and also deleted all downloads I had prepared for the trip. Ouch!

Let’s be clear about what we’re talking about here.

I’m trying to tell you that Qobuz Connect should sound no different from WiiM’s own native Qobuz support. I’m not talking about Chromecast—using Chromecast should not compare since it is not able to maintain the full sample rate and bit depth for high-resolution tracks. WiiM’s native Qobuz support (control through WiiM Home App) is bit-perfect just like Qobuz Connect, so as long as you’re playing the same bit-depth/sample rate version of the same track, there should be no difference between Qobuz Connect and using WiiM Home App’s integrated Qobuz interface.

I never meant to bring Chromecast into the conversation at all—objectively known to be inferior since it cannot achieve the full high-res bit-perfectly (at least in my testing, it always got downsampled).

Hi Ed, sorry for the inverted response. I've not been able to run all the iterations. I noted the specific instance referenced in the update. Tomorrow I may have time to test further.

The limited listening I did late this evening sounded similar but it was only one song. It came after I reran the Room Correction which among those saved versions previously tested is broader in the highs and lows. So, the system sounds more robust since the new RC settings.

Okay, but there’s a lot of moving parts here. Unless I’m mistaken, Qobuz Connect will still have whatever RC/PEQ profile you have selected for Wi-Fi input (the same input as the native Qobuz support in the WiiM Home app).

And obviously if you listen to one, then run RC/adjust the EQ profile, and then listen to the other, it is not an apples to apples comparison.

Hi again, I'm not using Wi-FI. Everything going in via Ethernet here.
Only one limited song compared via the WiiM app using Qobuz after the Room Correction was rerun.
A further listen maybe tomorrow when I can compare and monitor volume for each.

I'm not getting Android Version 9 on any of my devices.
Does anyone else feel the same way?

The Qobuz Windows app was automatically updated yesterday and works perfectly.

Might be regional or phone play store differences - my Motorola Edge 30 updated to v9.0.0 in the UK on Sunday evening. Guess it'll appear soon globally.

Maybe try a delete and re-install - although that may remove any downloads/purchases

I just reinstalled the app. Still version 8.6.1.1.

Then I'll have to be patient.

Although I tend to take it personally at the moment. ;)
Since I received the Connect Beta email in mid-April and only ever saw the normal version via the integrated link to the Play Store and I saw the note there that all places for Connect Beta are taken.

By the way, I live in Germany.

Works really well on wiim pro and wiim amp….but….replay gain doesn’t work. Works on the native app but not on “connect”. Don’t know if it is an oversight or a feature that they (wiim) can’t deliver. Replay gain works fine for spotify connect. Don’t want to go back to fiddling with volume during playlists or getting my ears blown off.

Raise a ticket thru the more/feedback section in the WiiM app and ask them. It could be that Qobuz haven’t implemented that in this initial release so the ball might be in their court.

Has this beta officially finished, now that it has been released to all?

Perhaps this thread should be closed, and a new non beta one should be started in the appropriate forum.
I’d support that and maybe move all comments from #834 onwards into a new “Qobuz Connect” thread in the Music Services Discussion forum and close this off with a comment redirecting people there.

Edit: this has been done :)
