You're reading this, so my clickbait style thread title worked out. Great! :D

Actually I hope to provide a little more than just a catchy heading. Over the next couple of days I plan to post some of my findings comparing my original WiiM Amp (PCB_version 5), bought in February 2024, with its shiny new steptwin, the WiiM Amp Pro. ;) For today I will (almost exclusively) focus on outer appearance, so don't expect any sound description larded with cloudy, flowery adjectives (yet).

Let me get this out of the way first, though: The WiiM Amp Pro does not support AirPlay in any form, the WiiM Amp does.

I'm sure you knew this before but in case you didn't, having said it once means I'm not going to discuss this topic any further. It's a fact and I'm not interested in any dispute about the importance of this feature. If you cannot live without AirPlay either avoid the WiiM Amp Pro or use any of the workarounds mentioned in this forum.

The Box
No unboxing here, but let's talk about the differences in the retail packaging.

Box Front Amp vs Amp Pro.jpg
Side by side they look pretty much the same except for the product name (Captain Obvious to the rescue) and the different perspective of the picture. On close inspection you might note that the feature logos (except for Hi-Res Audio) are gone. No traces of the colour green any more, it's all monochrome or silver.

But wait, what's that?

Box Size Amp vs Amp Pro.jpg
The box of the WiiM Amp Pro is actually a little longer than that of my WiiM Amp. Where did this extra length go on the inside?

Inner Box Amp vs Amp Pro.jpg
The inner paperboard lining is quite a bit thicker now, increasing the strength of the packaging. And that's not all.

Box Height Amp vs Amp Pro.jpg
The box is a tad taller, too. WiiM did add some extra padding below the recess holding the actual amp. You can actually feel it flex when depressing the center with your thumb. I don't know if this new packaging is exclusive to the WiiM Amp Pro. Those luring around since the introduction of the original Amp may remember that a small number of devices had not survived shipping (and quite a number of boxes showed signs of damage to the inner lining). At least some Amazon shipping centres had not included any form of padding in the shipping boxes. This looks like WiiM's response to that and the result is actually perfect.

The Accessories
No difference at all in this section. Just in case you never had the pleasure to unbox a WiiM Amp, WiiM Ultra or WiiM Amp Pro, here's a picture of what you get.

Accessories Amp vs Amp Pro.jpg
Still loving the fact that WiiM provide a full set of connection cables with these products. All cables, HDMI, optical and RCA are of pretty decent quality, a lot better than the stuff usually found with traditional separates. I've definitely experienced more cases where the supplied cables worked better than 3rd party ones, even if some tolerances might be found in this price range.

The Bluetooth remote is exactly the same as with all other WiiM products. No batteries included, no difference here as well.

The casework
It's the same on both devices .... not.

Case Colour Amp vs Amp Pro.jpg
The colour of the Amp Pro looks the same in frontal view, but slightly different at an angle. Amazon lists the Amp in either "Silver" or "Space Gray" while the Amp Pro is available in "Dark Gray" only, so maybe this shouldn't come as a surprise. If you ask me, Dark Gray does look a little different and (I might be going over the top here) a little more classy. Pick for yourself if I'm talking the left or the right unit in the above picture. ;) Phew!

Made your pick? OK, then you're ready to discover one more difference. Something's not right in that picture ... let's get down on our knees.

Case Height Amp vs Amp Pro.jpg
The WiiM Amp Pro (yes, the classy looking one on the right side) is actually taller than the WiiM Amp? How come? No reviewer has been talking about that, I surely must be kidding, no?

... to be continued ...

... right now. :p

No, I'm not kidding. Let's flip the units over.

Feet Amp vs Amp Pro.jpg
Brand new and taller rubber feet. The actual case is just as high on the Amp Pro as it is on the Amp. Nice, taller feet, better ventilation, they could even be retro-fitted ... if WiiM made those available as spare parts. I doubt they will. Talking about better ventilation ...

Bottom cover Amp vs Amp Pro.jpg
There we have it, a newly designed bottom cover for the WiiM Amp Pro (yes, it's on the left side now, this is a very flexible amp). The design goal seems obvious here, getting more fresh ambient air into the case.

And here's another difference I didn't really expect but noticed straight away:

Weight Amp vs Amp Pro.jpg

The WiiM Amp Pro (back to the right side) is quite a bit heavier than the WiiM Amp, around 236 grams (that the equivalent of 2 and 1/2 small stones for the Brits or 15/8 cups of strong coffee for US residents :p ). Bigger heatsink? Heavier opamps? Longer Wi-Fi antenna? More hot glue? More muscle? I don't know, but I have a suspicion.

Certainly not the cause for the difference in weight: New and improved binding posts.

Binding posts Amp vs Amp Pro.jpg
I like the look and feel a lot better but the technical reason is electrical isolation, of course. With these plastic covered terminals it's not so easy any more to short them when using loose cable ends. By any means, do yourself a favour and use proper banana plugs anyway. But if you can't for whatever reason this is a welcome enhancement.

@WiiM Support have confirmed that these speaker terminals are also used on the latest batch of the WiiM Amp. That's a good thing. If you want to be sure your new amp has them, go with the Pro. ;)

Final chapter for today (a short one):

The Status Light (aka LED)
There has been some criticism that telling the selected input from the colour of the LED was hard to impossible on the WiiM Amp. Some also complained about the Bluetooth input not being indicated by a blue light (instead of complaining about blue teeth) but by a green one (green teeth not sounding any more healthy than blue ones). I never cared about this too much as my WiiM Amp sits in the bed room and I use Wi-Fi streaming and sometimes USB (which is also treated like Wi-Fi) exclusively.

But hey, WiiM did listen and actually came up with a better solution. Luckily, the best @Wiimer of them all already did all the tedious and dirty work to provide you with a lively visual representation of how the new LED looks when switching between the different inputs. I will just borrow one of his pictures here as a teaser.

Can you guess which input is designated by this colour? Write it down in the comments section. :p

To see the full gallery in all its glory, head over to @Wiimer's posting over here:

Note by: The missing blue colour on the WiiM Amp has been confirmed to be a hardware limitation of the LED used, so this behaviour cannot be changed by means of a firmware update.

I was looking forward to your posting this excellent review. And I had the same impression as you about the appearance of Amp Pro. But I must confess that I did not stare at the packaging as closely as you did.

Thanks for the very nice review.😄👍👍👍

(After your review is complete, would you allow me to post here some photos of the Amp pro that I took earlier?)

Nice to see extra ventilation but I don't remember any issues with temperature for the original amp. I wonder how much difference vents on the bottom will make with no higher vents to let hot air out . I guess we will find out in due course 😃

I seem to recall a fair amount of discussion around temperature of the Amp at the start , and over how warm/hot it was for some. Plus WiiM did release some firmware to reduce standby power which would have helped mitigate that to a degree (no pun intended ;) )

Yes I remember the standby power issue. Confirming that worked was the only time I left my amp on standby 😃

At the time I checked, Amp Pro's CPU temperature was about 5C higher than Amp.
The indoor temperature was 26 degrees Celsius.

No idea where exactly in Japan Mr. @Wiimer lives, but Wizzard Google says actual average temperature in Japan is 20 to 22° C. Maybe his Dachshund insists in having it more cosy 😉
I live on the outskirts of Tokyo and tested the amp a month ago and it was still warm outside.😄

I thought dachshund was cold hardy, but it's not?🤔😅

I would say "Bluetooth" ;)

You're most welcome to post your photos anytime. Don't wait for me adding more content.

I do, but it was with rather early FWs and with high output signals

Exactly that. Plus the Amp Pro ...

... really is a new device, even though it looks very similar on the outside. WiiM wouldn't have spend the additional money for no reason.
