Test WIIM pro+ with different power supplies

I tested my iPower X I use on the WIIM pro on the Argon SOLO, not expecting anything because the Argon is supposed to clean the power by itself. Not so much. Immediate difference. So I had to get a second iPower..... I could pick that out in a blind A/B test (not a double blind, those are stupid)

Benchmarkmedia.com says, I quote:
"A well-designed switching power supply can be much quieter than a linear supply."

So the important words are here "can be".

A well-designed switching power supply can be as good as a LPS, maybe even better.

An who is convinced that the simple $ 2.50 plug-in switching power supply we get "for free" with a competitively priced WIIM Pro Plus is "well-designed"?

It is sufficient to make the WIIM Pro Plus work? Yes!

Is it better than a well-designed LPS? I do not think so!

Is it as good as a well-designed switching power supply, as Benchmark refers to? I do doubt it.

Alexander

Dear cc_rider,

I know this must be quite hard for you:

You quoted Benchmark, and YES, right now do live with that, what they said: ...."can be....".

;) + :D

Apart from being noisy to the device they are powering, switch modes also saturate the surrounding area with em radiation. Try holding a non-contact voltage tester near one (for testing for live wires in walls). It will start responding in quite a wide area. This is EM radiation that other non connected components will also pick up.

I have a 5V linear power supply for my external DAC. There are 2 outputs, so I connected my Wiim Pro to try. At first, I thought I felt more silence and a deeper bass. After 2 days, I reconnected the original power supply and ... I found a dynamic that I had lost. With headphones, it is even more obvious.

I have the same experience

I don't find anything wrong with the kit that the WiiM provides out of the box, it's "good enough" to start using the WiiM and that's better than what you get with a lot of other companies.

What brand and amperage spec. on your LPS ?

For example?
I bought a CD player a few years back that came with no cables, not even the power cable.

I ended up returning it since my 80s units were better, but yes disappointed was how I felt when I opened the box.

Amps also famously come with nothing, I bought a Cambridge audio amp that came with a lovely cloth that I'm not sure what it's for, but no RCA cables, no optical cables, and the remote had no batteries out of the box.

WiiM provides a cable for every input the device has.

I don't really use the HDMI input of my WiiM amp, but I sure appreciate having a spare HDMI cable!

I sort of understand why they don't.

Most people who spend more on hifi separates will probably use aftermarket cables with them.

I would never use the very cheap cables that a lot of stuff comes with but typically spend about £10 on something a bit more solid, it's not really about the sound, I just prefer the more robust connection.

Saying that, I'm perfectly happy to use the RCA that came with the Ultra.

Wiim don't supply a coaxial digital cable, so I bought one for about £12.

It's a bit like more expensive bicycles don't come with pedals, as there a few different options and everyone has their personal preference.
