I have two Dali Oberon's 5 and WiiM amp Ultra.
If I buy two WiiM sound Lite and put them in surround mode do I will have dolby digital 5.1 from VOD services?
Do center channel will be virtually placed in this configuration or I also need to buy Sound Lite as center speaker?
Best regards

Thx for info
If I read it correctly center speaker is not necessary an it should work but if someone can confirm that this setup will play dolby 5.1 from Netflix or similar VOD services?
2xfront speakers, subwoofer, 2x WiiM lite as surround. Center - virtual speaker done by WiiM Amp Ultra.

The Center speaker is not needed when listening from right between left and right speakers, as the centre channel, when missing a speaker, has its content distributed evenly between L and R speakers. For an offset listening position a center speaker is needed to maintain the centre sound output at the centre.

Yes, I can play Netflix and Amazon Prime 5.1 videos with wireless surround. (However, to my experience, some 5.1 videos can't be played with surround.)

My system configuration is Amp Ultra + WiiM Sound + WiiM Sound Lite. In my home, there are almost no audio dropouts, and it works normally.

However, there are a few points to note.

Currently, automatic switching between 5.1 and 2.1 is not possible. When listening to music on the Ultra, you need to manually ungroup it via the WiiM app. Also, when watching TV, you must manually regroup and assign channels to the surround speakers again. (Installing the Ultra's beta firmware "Input Sound Profile" should allow automatic 5.1 regrouping linked to input switching.)

Since this is a bit cumbersome, it might be better to keep the 5.1 group active at all times and mute the surround speakers when listening to music.

Also, EQ and Roomfit are disabled with wireless 5.1. According to the roadmap, this functionality may be enabled in the future, but it's unclear when.

As you say even without a center speaker, Ultra creates a virtual center.

I ordered one WiiM sound lite because I read in instruction on second post that I only need one to make surround sound or I misunderstood this.

@Wimmer You worried me a little bit. I was thinking it is possible to make 5.1 config for HDMI and 2.1 for music and it changes seamlessly. And EQ is disabled!:(
If it works like You said I think I will return it back :(

Best regards

Yes, you can assign a single WiiM Sound Lite (WSL) unit to the surround speaker. However, since one unit will play both the surround right and left channels, you must place the WSL directly behind your listening position.

I recommend reading this manual and trying out the Sound Profile feature.

Ok. It will be very helpful option where it comes to all users and devices.
If someone have home automation it is possible to do it even now but it is much harder than option build in app.

Hello,

I received my WiiM Sound Lite today. 5.1 sound is working quite good even I only have one speaker as satellite (there is not much channel separation) but I am not very happy how WiiM Sound sounds as standalone speaker:( It is quite silent and there is no bass (40m2 living room). Maybe I was hyped to much. I comparing it to Dali 5 and sub :) But I also have Pionner MRX-3 since 5 years and I must say it sounds better for me (I think:)

Don't make me wrong. It is ok for smaller rooms and maybe I need to put it in other place and make some EQ but for first 30 minutes of using...

From the other side... Packing and quality is superb. Pairing with app and how it works also. Excellent job WiiM.

For my usage - satellite for some movies it is ok.

PS: There should be option to use only front speakers + sub when in music mode. It should be automatic. At this software version You need to mute satellite with WiiM app.

Best regards

Hi,
This is a very small speaker, so I believe it has its limits in large rooms. However, if you place it in the corner of the room and position it flush against the back wall, it will boost the bass somewhat. Have you tried that yet?

I am using it as surround and it needs to be in certain place. It is ok for my application. I will test it and give feedback

IMHO WiiM Sound and Sound Lite are factory-tuned to be much too bright.
The main problem is really the dual tweeters, which makes high-frequency dispersion much wider than the bass and mids, resulting in brightness that can be difficult to pinpoint and fix (though EQ can help with this somewhat).

With careful placement you can get bass down to about 50Hz, but at elevated playback levels bass will relatively quickly start to distort and compress. Sub-optimal placement can cause additional bass deficiency, making things worse.
If possible, my advice would be to place the Sound more that 1,7m away from side walls (which puts the main SBIR null under 50Hz), but close to the back wall (so you get some bass reinforcement from it).
