USB greyed out

I have a WiiM Ultra plugged into a PS Audio StellarGold DAC using a USB cable. It's been working well for months but suddenly is now greyed out as an option. I have rebooted from the app, unplugged power, and changed USB cables. Nothing has worked. Any suggestions? And yes USB is chosen as the input on the StellarGold.

Thanks,

John

Hi johnbug,

It seems that WiiM Ultra can't recognize your DAC. Please send us a feedback ticket from the WiiM Home App so we can check it for you promptly. Thank you for your patience and support.

That makes no sense. As it was supporting it. Did a firmware upgrade break it?

Try deleting and re-installing the wim home app. There have been other reports of users not being able to select audio output on the latest Android app and it appears the Play Store has reverted to the previous version.

John, did you get this to work? I'm curious what your symptom is or was. I have a similar situation, trying to integrate a USB cable from my WiiM Ultra to my PS Audio Gain Cell Dac. Unlike you, I have not gotten this connection to work at all, and while you say USB was grayed out, on my system it doesn't show up as an option in the WiiM app. I only see coax, optical etc. I switched to ln8 on the gain cell. Reboot everything, no change.

I ask AI why it's not working. After some troubleshooting, it has concluded that the WiiM cannot provide adequate 5V to Gain Cell, which it needs to activate its USB processing and then acknowledge back to the WiiM that it exists. Since it has never worked on my system, I am assuming this could be true? AI tells me I need a powered USB hub, new set of cables to boot. Have yet to get those, looking for some confirmation from someone, possibly on this thread.

Anyway, just another puzzle to figure out

Welcome.

Surely the Gain Cell doesn't need power on the usb port?
Well no but AI says so 🤣 It is mains powered.

This is what Mr Computer says:

USB Audio won’t appear in the WiiM app unless a compatible USB DAC is detected.
If the DAC doesn’t complete the USB handshake, the WiiM hides the USB output entirely.

Solution: The Gain Cell DAC needs a powered USB hub between the WiiM Ultra and the DAC.
The hub stabilizes the USB handshake so the DAC properly enumerates as a USB Audio device.
Once the hub is added, the WiiM immediately recognize the DAC and the USB output will appear.

I'm going to purchase the hardware needed from Best Buy ($60 or so), and check this out, will let everyone know the results

Hi everyone, I joined this forum just to post this solution that I stumbled upon:

I too was having trouble connecting the Wiim Ultra with a DAC via USB. Tried different methods and cables, and thanks to this thread I came upon the solution (for my case, at least).

You need to use a 5V capable USB cable; it doesn't have to be powered, just a cable that is able to deliver such output. In my case, it was an old original OnePlus (phone) charging cable that is capable of "Dash Charging" (OnePlus' quick charge moniker).

Just Google "oneplus dash cable specs". When I used it to connect the DAC, instantly the USB output of the Wiim Ultra was no longer greyed out and it recognized my DAC (which is a Fiio K13 DAC by the way).

Good luck!

A standard USB cable has the 5V pins connected.
