I very much suggest using lyrion music server on something like a raspberry pi with your usb drive. So much better experience as you can play across your own network to any device, including WiiM devices.
man sounds complicated, more i look into it the more i just dont get it. where do i put this software on my iphone? I thought i could just plug in the f'n harddrive and choose files to play.I very much suggest using lyrion music server on something like a raspberry pi with your usb drive. If you have the Material skin installed on Lyrion (aka LMS) then you don't even need an app on your phone. You just point to the server and it renders like this. You need some kind of music server/service
And storage for the files
or something like pi and USB HDD
The above can be on the same item, for example a laptop with music on it, a NAS, or it can be split up. ie music service on laptop, but music on a nas.
The built in music service on the wiim is basic but functional.
You don't put software on your phone, but your phone can be used to control the wiim.
If you have a NAS, then install a music service on that, either the stock one (UPNP) which is typically basic but functional, once you've done that start looking into better music services or a dedicated unit like raspberry pi
I've used LMS for about 15 years, it's great, started on a laptop, then moved it to a NAS or two, now it's on a raspberry pi. With music on a NAS. Three room setup and it works well.

Since you already have a USB HDD all you need is a raspberry pi, £50-£100. I went for the 4GB model
with craig drummonds LMS app on my phone

Then you lose the ability to use your phone hardware volume controls. The app is only available for Android though. If you have the Material skin installed on Lyrion (aka LMS) then you don't even need an app on your phone. You just point to the server and it renders like this.

For most users it is an unnecessarily complicated solution, and isn't compatible with the WiiM Home App.man sounds complicated, more i look into it the more i just dont get it. where do i put this software on my iphone? I thought i could just plug in the f'n harddrive and choose files to play.

Hopefully you've sent feedback to WiiM and they can get you up and running.
This is no reason to use LMS as the same is true for all WiiM devices with a USB port.So much better experience as you can play across your own network to any device, including WiiM devices.
Thumbdrive should be OK, some external hard disks might not. The maximum power the WiiM Ultra can provide to external drives is 8,75 W. This limit must not be exceeded at any time.mine hasnt detected anything, not even a thumbdrive
