Usb stick with ripped cds, not displaying correctly

I any years ago I ripped my CD collection to a drive using Nero, in Flac format, I have since played these files back initially using LMS, but more recently on the Wiim Pro via plex, through Plex my albums album art is displayed pretty complete other than a few albums, but using a usb stick with the same files a fair amount of the album art is missing and compilation albums end up with every song as an album.
Could someone suggest a windows app to take these so that I can view these correctly on the Wimm ultra?

Mp3tag is a good option to manage your collection on Windows.
From your screenshot I'd guess that you don't have an AlbumArtist defined or a compilation flag set for your compilations.

Thanks for the reply, that makes sense, does Mp3tag work with Flac?

It also pays to read mp3tag’s documentation. It is very powerful if you get into its scripting capabilities.

Btw. Plex looks up your album art for you whereas the WiiM app is relying on you to either have embedded artwork or a cover/folder.jpg

I have spent an hour or so using mp3tag, fairly simple, but I cannot find a way to add a compilation flag?

As long as you have an AlbumArtist tag defined e.g. Various Artists, then you shouldn't need a compilation tag.

To add Compilation to the left panel:
  • Right click in the space next to Genre and select Customize
  • Select Add Field and choose Compilation from the Field drop down box and give it a name
  • Set 'size of field' to Small
  • Click OK and move the Compilation field within the panel using the up/down buttons.
  • Finally click OK
To add Compilation to the grid view
  • Right click on one of the column headers and choose 'Customize columns'
  • Click the New button
  • Give the field a Name, then in the Value and Field properties paste the name of the tag surrounded by '%' e.g. %compilation%

Are all the tracks of an album stored under the same parent folder e.g. /AlbumArtist/Album/CD0X/01...ext?

Thanks that's really helpful. :)

If you use dbPoweramp to rip your CDs (highly recommended) there is a compilation tick box at top centre which will apply it at the ripping stage.

Good info, I did my whole CD collection a good while ago, I now only stream using Tidal or from my ripped cd collection.

Hi, new to Wiim but this seemed to be the best thread to ask questions regarding USB input of scanned CD's.

I've ripped my CD's using dBpoweramp successfully but when I browse the media library on the Wiim App in Album view it seems to handle albums with various artists oddly. Multiple tracks are listed as separate albums. It seems to create a separate "album" for each artist. I've checked with the dBpoweramp companion app PerfectTUNES and the various artist albums are all tagged as Compilations.

Is this a feature designed to group tracks by the same artists together? If it is intentional and I only want to see a various artists album once in Album view do I just turn off the compilation tag?

Advice and ideas appreciated.

Do you have the AlbumArtist tag populated? Typically you'd set this to 'Various Artists' for compilations.

Ah ha! No they don't. I've just checked and PerfectTUNES just says <different> in the Artist field. I'll change to "Various Artists" and try that.

Thanks for your help simbun.

It's the AlbumArtist field that should be populated with 'Various Artists' not the Artist field, that should contain the artists that performed on the track.

Just chiming in to say that the AlbumArtist = VA situation is not necessary in the LMS world.

LMS will treat an album as a Compilation (and index it as such) if a) the compilation tag is set or b) if tracks are by different artists and there is no AlbumArtist tag set.

It should be noted that when you rip a compilation using dbPoweramp this is the default behaviour i.e. no AlbumArtist is set.

I am not sufficiently familar with all Music Servers to say which is the norm but to an extent the problem is a result of WiiM choosing MiniDLNA as its onboard Music Server. It is only a very basic server but it is comparatively lightweight in resource terms hence its inclusion.

Thanks d6jg. New to this world so taking step by step. Currently ripping CD's to a USB disk drive and connecting this to the Wiim Amp Pro USB input. Once happy with this will look into Servers, something that has so far confused me.

There are some notable difference between various Music Servers but most people with large local libraries prefer to use one over the WiiM MiniDLNA implementation because there are limitations. The principle one being that in order to add new files or to correct tagging anomalies you have to remove the USB disk from the WiiM. It is so much easier if you have a proper server and can point things like dbPoweramp directly at the file store.
