What speakers are you using?

These seem really nice! No doubt better than any budget - line speakers. Unfortunately I have no knowledge or experience with this sort of craftmanship.
Not much craftsmanship needed as it's a kit with detailed directions. Besides the great sound it's a wonderful learning experience for beginners. Youtube has excellent lessons on how to solder the simple crossover components.

Since getting my Ultra last week, my Amp has been disconnected, and feeling left out. I have remedied the situation, and it is now set up in my bedroom, and I have connected an old pair of Wharfedale Modus Cube speakers, which had been previously used as rear speakers in my surround system.

They are currently sitting on top of my bed headboard about 3’ apart, and sound surprisingly good when played at low to medium volume so as to not disturb anyone at night.

They have been connected so that Left and Right are correct when lying down. I have also set the maximum volume to 75% to keep things more under control.

I can’t find very much information about them online, but there does seem to be a few variations mentioned, but mine are like the ones in the link below.

Picked up a Wiim amp in the Black Friday sales with some small Dali Opticon 1 Mk2 speakers to replace KEF LSXII which I prefer in another room to this one. Hooked it up to a Rel T Zero for a desktop NFM set up. Wiim Amp plays nice with these 4ohm speakers, fed by an iMac for work and Roon Nucleus One for music. Sub makes a massive difference x'ing-over 70 Hz.

I also auditioned Fyne F300i (half the price and very good) and Dali Oberon (2/3 the price) with the Wiim, the Opticon won out.

Just for kicks I hooked the speakers up to a spare 2003 Far Eastern EL84 valve/tube pre amp & power amp I had lying around, fed by an R2R DAC which usually feeds another system in the room. No sub.

The speakers opened up (good quality speakers should scale), with the Wiim comparatively a little drier and lacking some drive/dynamics, I'm no techie but I'd guess the extra current helps.

The Wiim is a fantastic and highly functional bit of kit though, it's all I use when I'm working and couldn't be happier with it. I haven't played with the room correction (waiting until I get proper desktop stands/new phone as mic is sketchy) but I hope that will make it even better.

There's a huge mark up on speakers, probably more than any other component. A $1000 dollar speaker can be built for $100. You guys should learn to DIY. Speaker plans are usually free on the net. I knew little about cabinet construction until I took a weekend class provided by a local wood working store. Straight cuts are free at Home Depot or Lowes when you buy the plywood or MDF. Many of you already have the basic tools that are required but an inexpensive Kreg pocket hole jig makes building a strong box a piece of cake. There's one in this picture and youtube shows how it works.

While I don't support this, it's not a massive surprise when people might buy them once every 20 years...
