Which NAS works well with WiiM Pro?

Any idea when Synology will release the 225+?
I have no idea I'm afraid.

Don't you have anything you could use in the meantime given you've only a small collection e.g. router, rpi, mini-pc?

My router is basic and old, I'll probably replace it with a modern gigabit switch. I don't have a rpi module or a mini-pc.

I guess I could get a 1TB USB3 mini-drive and plug it directly to the Wiim Ultra. Alternatively, I could get a 500MB SSD USB3 drive.

I suppose I could get a short USB3 extension cable, that way I can rip the usb drive off to copy new files whenever I need to.

I forgot you had the Ultra, that should bridge the gap nicely - assuming it handles tracks without metadata.

Found this information:-

  • File System vs. Metadata:
The WiiM Ultra, when browsing a USB drive, will primarily use the folder and file names as the basis for what it displays, rather than relying on metadata tags like artist, album, etc.

  • Metadata Importance:
While the WiiM Ultra can display tracks without metadata, it will still use metadata for a more complete and accurate display of the music library, including album art and other information.

Just be aware having Docker is less efficient than a native service.

Since you have a small collection I'd just use USB stick for now. NAS will come in handy later if you plan to have multi room. For a single room setup, a HDD into the Ultra will do.

Brother bought a Ultra he's using a 3.5" HDD, it works decent enough.

Not as good as LMS but you'd need another £80/£100 for that

You make a good point there, makes sense.

What streaming service do you use? - I really like the interface (UI and UX) of Spotify, hoping they will move to high res soon, at least 24/48.

I don't use internet streaming. My music collection is big enough to not need it, I just play music from my NAS

Plus the whole poor quality from streaming. Free spotify is pretty bad.

Who doesn't have compute to spare nowadays, even on a Pi4!

Containers offer so much flexiblity; you want try a new media server, or test the latest build of your current media server, then just spin up a new container.

I'm all in, I've even containerised most of my Windows machine using Sandboxie-Plus.

i'm in the QNAP camp for what it's worth... been pretty happy with my NAS overall - the newer versions of QTS (NAS firmware) are actually much improved since when i first bought the device. don't really use it for music since i mainly use streaming. but i use it for backups etc.

i could be wrong, but i think QNAP tends to support their older models for longer than Synology or Asustor or Zyxel etc... they also seem to offer slightly better prices for equivalent hardware compared to Synology. but i reckon you can't go far wrong with either choice...

Love the set-top box shape versions of QNAP. Although, when I do make the move, I think it will be Synology due to the software (UI and UX).

forgot to mention that QNAP has HDMI-out included with many of their models. no other NAS manufacturer does this, afaik

could be handy if you wanted to use the NAS as a media center, or to quickly configure/use it with a keyboard/mouse + monitor.

True, I noticed that. Is it capable of running Android TV OS?

Thanks for the suggestions. The USB splitter option is probably the logical one for me but, the geek in me has been inspired by the Forum to experiment with a music server and the Pi.
So, I have had some fun setting up a music server. I have a Raspberry Pi with PiCorePlayer and Lyrion Music Server with a USB HDD attached. I have set up Samba and transferred my FLAC files from my PC to the Music Server.

I have enabled Squeezlite on my Wiim Amp Pro.

I can play music from the LMS browser via the PC to the Amp Pro.

Pretty good. But, when I go to Home Music Share on the Wiim App it cannot find a "media server". See screenshot.

I've been able to set up a Shared Folder" link to the server and can see all the folders and files.

Not sure what I should expect from the App but assume it should connect.

Any suggestions?

The obsolescent upnp/dlna media interface plugin is required for the LMS system to appear as a “Home media share” compatible server in the WiiM home app, but really don’t see the benefit of that having gone thru all the effort to set up LMS only to turn your back on its more powerful client interface.

You only need the UPNP bridge plugin if you want to play from LMS to a WiiM Mini - the other WiiMs are already squeezelite clients.

Has @ddasterdly found Material plugin and how to access directly from the phone?

As you all know I run Lyrion. I only really ever use the WiiM Home App to set things up in the first place and to try an occasional config change. All playing control is via Material (in app mode) on my iPhone. If I was an Android use I would use the Material apk.

I would avoid the UPnP/DLNA Media Interface plugin as it is ancient and very basic and unless you have a WiiM Mini there is no need for the UPnP/DLNA Bridge plugin at all.

Thanks @d6jg , I'll look at how to access the material plugin from Android. I also plan to look at Symphonium.

Probably a silly question but am I right to assume that using either of these options will just bypass the Wimm Home App and I will not lose any features, quality or performance this way?

Thanks also to @Burnside and @rccarguy.

The only thing that the WiiM Home App has that Lyrion doesn't (with the right plugins) is Amazon Music.

The Lyrion implementations of Radio Paradise, BBC Sounds and Internet Radio are arguably better.
Lyrion has Spotify, Qobuz, Tidal and Pandora plugins that allow you (if you want to) to integrate favourites from these services into your local music library to create a seamless one stop experience.

Edit
There is also the Music & Artist Information (MAI) plugin which gives you biographies, reviews and lyrics on virtually everything you play.
