Wiim Ultra vs Node Icon

Good catch. I had only been looking at the standard 2x4 HD specs.

Identical hardware, of course, but the software makes the difference here. At least technically speaking.

I won't judge what's audible. Back in the day (and using my back then system) I already found the original 2x4 to be transparent (just pass through, no actual processing).

Guys I have the Node Icon for a few days to compare with my Wiim Ultra, so if anyone has some specific questions regarding comparisons go ahead and ask.

One thing that does not seem to get mentioned is that the contrast on the Icons display is much worse, you can not get it even close to black instead it's a washed out grey, more so than the Ultras display which I at first thought was "bad". Not a big deal but at this price the cheapest of LCD screens does not seem to fit the unit...

Another observation, the UI and BlueOS system is waaaay behind in user friendliness and configurability, poor layout and settings "hidden" in sub-pages with same name as other pages settings.
Also the UI for BluOS is noticeably slower for on the same phone I'm using for Wiim home app and all on the same network (wired)
Song covers/lists appear and load slower etc.

Sub woofer integrations is much worse, you can only set crossover in steps of 10, there is no delay/timing setting for speakers/subs either.

There is also no "Per input volume" and for some reason the volume varies A LOT on inputs/sources that do not vary on the Ultra, enough so that your large speakers could blow your ears out! (This was requested as a feature 4 years ago on the Blue Sound forums, and is currently not possible/done still!).

Welcome to the "less supported and featureless world" of Bluos... 😉
Anyway, subwoofer management reaches the top, if you get Dirac license. The overall result will be stunning.
I will test that out today, read up on it as much as I could, still they have no clear info on HOW you enable it on the device itself :D
There is a guide on how to perform the measurements, but it ends with "you can save up to 5 presets to the Icon", but nowhere on the icon is that option/presets visible? :D

Also I have a big reservation for Dirac.. and that is nowhere is it stated what conversions are being done and at what sample rate everything is performed at...I would doubt that it does it "better" than the "Mini DSP SHD Studio" - that uses 24bit 96KHz processing.

"Less supported" is an understatement! I would venture to say that there actually is no support at all, there is only one person "Tony" and most likely a crew of Chinese consultant developers that keep the software "afloat".

I mean, 4+ years and counting for the addition of "per-input volume control"? Link

Hi,

I am very interested in Dirac.
Would it be possible for you to post a screenshot here of the results of the WiiM RC and Dirac correction?

If you don't mind 🙂.
Thank you.

Thank you.

If i get it working I will for sure post all that info!

Don't know about Dirac on Icon, in nad C3050LE it was factory enabled.
Once enabled, I suggest to use the Mac or pc (Mac version has some less driver's problems) Dirac software from their site and not the app version that is behind in level and gives less features.
I agree that there aren't many clear guides but the use it's substantially simple.
Once enabled (in some ways) on icon, then run the software in the same local network.
Software should find Dirac capable devices and gives the choice to proceed with.
Better download a target curve, as exemple the NAD one from their support site and load it on Dirac. It will be use on filters generation.
Start with levels adjustment, you can choice a microphone and its calibration file to connect to pc or maybe directly to icon (on Nad C3050LE a dedicated microphone was supplied).
In the adjustment process, levels are automatically lowered to avoid explosion, then a single sweep on each channel can be played to get a reasonable reading, example -19dB on each speaker.
Then move the microphone (with a stand) in each position showed and start the single measure.
You can choice three calibration from the narrowed to the wide one, take the middle.
Position of each measure, should be precise but don't get mad with, generally it should be at least 30cm from the previous.
Once completed the measures (from 11 to 19 points if I remind well) go with filter generation, remember to load the proper target curve. The ideal slope shouldn't be horizontal but little decreasing with frequency (as Dr. Harman or others researchs say)
You can generate as many filters you want and store them on the 5 preset positions, without take new measures.

Hope this could help... 😎

On mdc2 Bluos card, the process of Dirac is 48KHz, not sure if 24 or 32bit.
On miniDSP Flex, its process with Dirac lowering from 96KHz to 48KHz 32bit (they say in datasheet).
I won't be worried about, since results are so good that definitely sampling rate it's absolutely not a problem.
Beware, sometimes we are so used to a non correct situation that the correct ones can be "strange" and need to be acclimated...😉

I forgot to say that i read in some tech notes that Dirac manages the energy of frequencies in a different way than other measuring software can read, so don't expect consistent results with them on a Dirac corrected site.

Are you returning it ? @DG77
Still testing!
Need to find a laptop to use the desktop version of Dirac as suggested (the ipad version looks like a kindergarten app..)

Sound vise used only as transport and pre-amp in my case it does sound good, but now Wiim released Todays update with ”new resampling algorithm” so will compare again!

Hi.
Leave the Icon's volume setting on Smart Volume Adjustment (that's what I have) or just off.

I do not see such an option anywhere, and since I am using it as a Pre-Amp I need to be able to adjust the volume.

I think he was meaning the replay gain in audio prefs of Bluos, I noted it makes a mistake with some songs and lowers too much the level, both with tidal and Qobuz....

As a dac compared to your dac and wiim’s dac?
