Ongoing Beta Beta Test: Plex

@JeffW you make a great point. I often audition records on a friend's server before deciding I want to add it to my own. It's one of if the nice social features of Plex. Right now I have to use Plexamp for this and am then hamstrung by Chromecast.

A power-user feature, for sure.

New WiiM Ultra owner here. Love it, even enjoying the current state of Plex integration in the production firmware and andoid app. I also happen to be a PlexAmp user mostly in the car (android auto) and through headphones when exercising through the same android phone. At first I thought I wanted to be able to stream PlexAmp from that same phone, but most of my listening at home is more serious - full album at a time, etc., and I ended up not likeing that doing so through PlexAmp ended the listing session that was ongoing in the car. So, I have been using the Plex integration in the WiiM Home app to control home listening.

What I just realized was that this works for me being on the sam network as the Plex server, but it does not work for other family members in their own homes.
  • Why does Plex have to be on the same network?
  • Is this addressed by the beta software discussed here?
  • Is there a plan to address this lack of remote access?
All we know is that this is one of the features they're actively working on:
"Native Plex Control Protocol for the native Plex endpoint"

One would assume this should give us the ability to "cast" from the native Plex apps. As their apps work independent from the network, issue #1 should be automatically dealt with ;)

It does sound promising, @pieterv1. Thanks

Hi All, first time posting hopefully this is the right spot.

Got two Wiim Minis all set up okay, I have Plex logged in and it can see the server I can browse all the tracks but have no playback and get the 'no server found' only on playback.

I can play Plex through dlna but would rather the 'native' app inside Wiim Home.

So should I be able to play through Plex in Wiim directly currently with the Minis or is it using Chromecast protocol in the background and I missed that?

TIA

Yes you should be able to browse Plex through the WHA (Browse > Music Services > Plex).

Regarding the connection failures, have you tried the suggestions in this post?

Ahh great thanks for confirming. Now on to troubleshooting...

I haven't tried doing 'prefer secured connections' but I did try allowing my entire IP range. Logged out and restarted Plex logged out of Wiim reconnected and still the same issue.

I have tried on both iPhone and Android, so i suspect it's a network thing.

I am running a mesh network.

Will see if I can find a fix.

Thanks.

Okay so I switched to Preferred over Required and instantly started working, so must be some handshake issue between Wiim app and Plex server even though they are on the same network.

Hi everyone! Thanks all for testing out the Plex integration! We've been going through your feedback and have partnered with Plex to build a more in depth integration with Plex before we go live. Please continue to share feedback, we'll keep reading it.

We'll let you know when there's more to share, but for now we're going back to the development desk for some more time.
Hi Ryan, any updates on (the new form of) Plex integration?

Things have been quiet on a few fronts (e.q. Qobuz Connect and other betas for example) but now that we’re past Christmas, New Year and Chinese New Year, things will hopefully start picking up again 🤞

Yup, not very amused with such type of answer after such a long time 🙄

Doesn't sound promising
What are you missing when you use Google Cast from PlexAmp? I know it's not gapless, but I'm assuming the server handles all the sweet fades and other processing.

Does the PlexAmp endpoint solution do multi room?
Can the PlexAmp app control multiple PlexAmp endpoints?

Everytime someone asks for the PlexAmp endpoint integration someone asks why Google Cast isn’t good enough 🤷🏻‍♂️

The only reply I've seen mentions gapless and sweet fades, which I thought would have been processed by the server and sent as a single stream (gapless not needed).

I haven't seen any mention of its multi room capabilities.

I think the lack of gapless is still an issue. If you are playing DSOTM the "sweet fades" should not happen. If they do its bad programming. I will have to try it using PlexAmp in the car and find out.

Do you have a Plex Pass? I thought all the DSP was behind a paywall.

Given you need a reasonably capable server to perform the sonic analysis, I assumed it would also handle the fades/mixing.

I figured track based playback would be broken (not gapless).

You don't need PlexPass for the iOS or Android apps. If you do have it you get DJ stuff but sweet fades and other things are included in the free version.

I will try to play DSOTM when I am next in the car. I would expect there to be no fades but maybe there is a gap, maybe not.

PHT30 gives you a free month on a monthly subscription, so I'll try it all out for myself :)

Chromecast is not bit-perfect for me since I have my library in ALAC. It always transcodes.
