Ongoing Beta Beta Test: Plex

Plex stopped working on both of my minis on Friday - it can no longer see my server. Still works via DLNA which I actually prefer, but figured I'd report it anyway
Yes. I've been having intermittent issues with this as well. I'm not using it much but sometimes I'll use it just for kicks. And sometimes it can't find my server. Just holding out for headless Plexamp.

Headless Plexamp is very much what this needs to be

That's not going to help those with Minis (@90c4) or without a Plex Pass.
Yes it has been mentioned before that said "Plexamp Headless" implementation would not be supported by the WiiM Mini because of the lack of processing power/memory.

But that shouldn't necessarily mean that the owners of a WiiM Pro or better are limited to the current half-baked solution, right? :)

It was the same thing with room correction: it's not because the Mini didn't support it that owners of the higher end devices had to miss out on it.

The Mini is probably still the ideal device for many people, but even at its launch, 3 years ago we could've known that the cheap little hockey puck would probably have its limitations.

Not sure if this is the right place, but do playlists within Plex not work from WiiM? I can access them, but when I try to play them no sound directs to a particular unit.

Yes, playlists do work. When wiim can see the server. You do have to log into plex in all devices.

This is also happening to me. I have 2 minis and a Pro +, it started to be intermittent then it stopped working. I logged out of Plex in the wiim app, then logged back in. This solved the problem for a short time.
This also worked for me. Thanks

Plexamp feels essential to me. I am currently on the Qobuz Connect beta and that works like Spotify Connect. What is notable is how much easier it is to use and more feature rich than using the WiiM app. The native apps are always going to be way ahead of anything the WiiM one will achieve so plexamp feels like a must have

Re-reviewing the Plex functionality as it stands, since I used the initial betas:
  • It's good that the "Recently Added" is now a rolling list - it only used to contain the latest 6 additions to your library, which was way too limited.
  • The addition of lists akin to what Plex generates to throw unexpected content at you is very welcome.
  • Outside of the lack of plexamp casting, the only annoying thing that's missing is that it doesn't allow scrobbling. However, whilst digging around elsewhere in the forums, I discovered this workaround if you have Home Assistant running on your network which, so-far, works perfectly for me.
Overall, I'm a lot more satisfied and less down on it (but mainly because of the scrobbling workaround) :)

I've also have this issue on my 2 minis and my pro plus. I have noticed losing plex server connection is happening less often. I hope this issue is resolved. I like the plex feature, because my wife is familiar with plex ui she can make her own Playlist and navigate it well. I normally play albums so I can use dlna.

Greetings, this was working for me but now every time I click on a song on my iPhone a message appears at the bottom of the screen (of the phone) saying 'Server not available'

I've tried logging out and back in again, and I can see that the Wiim Ultra is fine with Spotify from the phone also. My plex server is on the local network but opened to the internet on port 32400 with its own SSL cert.

Any clues?

It happened to me as wel due to changes in my network and/or the WiiM Ultra changing from wired ethernet to WiFi...

Here it was fixed by logging out/in so I'm not entirely sure what's happening in your case... it's a mess really, Plex shouldn't be sensitive to basic factors like the connection type, location etc. That's the whole essence of the service. We can only hope for a big update with endpoint compatibility from the native Plex apps.

I can see that the Wiim is trying to do something, the touch screen shows a file playing screen just before the iphone gives the error.

I can't believe it would be the network as I've got 3 remote systems connecting to it, a car player and an NVIDIA shield right next to the Wiim that works great.

Yes me too, that's my point unfortunately. I'm not saying there's anything wrong with your config or your network. It just seems that WiiM's specific implementation of Plex is causing more issues than it should while most of us would just prefer to use the native Plexamp app and be able to connect to the WiiM's (not through airplay or chromecast)

Is the SSL cert a new thing? I can imagine that the WiiM might be confused about what interface it should be connecting to Plex on - internal or external.

Interesting. I've mostly been okay with the Plex feature, just that when I play really high bitrate files (DXD or DSD128 and higher) the music cuts in and out, likely because the data transfer rate cannot keep up with the demand.

Good call! I switched from 'required' to 'preferred' secure connections in Plex network and suddenly (without logging out/in) the Wiim started playing tracks selected from the iphone.

So, I guess this is now an enhancement request for Wiim: please can you make it work with secure connections like every other client I have does :)

cheers @d6jg and @pieterv1

I've been experiencing this issue for about 2 months. I just opened ticket #522427. As far as I know this may be the first one for this issue.

I just looked at the SSL and mine was already in preferred. I just added the IPs of my devices to access plex without authorization. This may help, I'll follow up in a couple of days.Wiim IP addresses.jpg

New WiiM Ultra owner here. Love it, even enjoying the current state of Plex integration in the production firmware and andoid app. I also happen to be a PlexAmp user mostly in the car (android auto) and through headphones when exercising through the same android phone. At first I thought I wanted to be able to stream PlexAmp from that same phone, but most of my listening at home is more serious - full album at a time, etc., and I ended up not likeing that doing so through PlexAmp ended the listing session that was ongoing in the car. So, I have been using the Plex integration in the WiiM Home app to control home listening.

What I just realized was that this works for me being on the sam network as the Plex server, but it does not work for other family members in their own homes.
  • Why does Plex have to be on the same network?
  • Is this addressed by the beta software discussed here?
  • Is there a plan to address this lack of remote access?
