This is where the concept of "warning" is often useful....It's extremely useful for sources with a known (too) low level. That's my take on it.

Exactly. And of course the digitised analogue input, where the actual level may be anything from very high to very low.
I didn't say it couldn't have a use... but warnings and an "overload" could still be useful ;-)
