My experience with Wiim Ultra

...using two Ultras since mid. of Dec. '24 and I can confirm, they are great. But I must say, all my WiiM-devices are great (started with Minis, later get one of the first Pro). They are all in use and I'm exited every time anew.

Do you care about the behavior of others here? It seems being a moderator covers that area as well, I should know, been on forums for decades and have served as a moderator, where I actually moderated.

Most of their posts are acting like spoiled little brats and nothing about the OP's original post or his further posts and where I am actually offering advice that was asked for.

I apologize for the misunderstanding, it was not aimed at you at all, it was a timing issue. It seems some posts may of been removed, not sure, I think there were some that should of been or at least warnings posted to the poster.

This thread is off the rails. Anyways, I have the amp, if I buy the Ultra would I be able to do 5.1? Utilizing the Amp for my rear channels. Has anyone experienced this new feature?

Back to the OP's first post, I'm perfectly happy with the Ultra's built-in DAC. I originally had a Bifrost 2 and a Modi Multibit 2 and spent quite a bit of time doing A/B comparisons, including syncing and level-matching the output. After many hours, was never able to reliably tell the difference. But, I gave up my audiophile card years ago after the conversations on the audio forums got so silly. I made the decision to sell my external DACs and go with the Wiim's since it made things so much simpler (which my wife really appreciates.) Made the same decision to go all Wiim with my second system and headphone setup (Wiim Pro and Pro Plus, respectively.) No regrets -- enjoying my music daily.

And, I like the Wiim app and have been impressed with their constant stream of updates, though they still have a ways to go with respect managing the active play queue (adding/deleting individual songs and reordering the play list, adding tracks from different sources, etc.)

I got the Ultra about 6 months ago, must give credit to Wiim for doing such a nice job. Love the app and the entire system is regularly updated which shows that the people behind Wiim are committed and passionate which is refreshing. I use Spotify but notice the Wiim app runs the Spotify app separately. I hope Wiim can change this in the future so that all streaming services can run effectively from within the Wiim app. Wiim should also try and persuade Apple for a partnership pertaining to Apple Music. I think a lot of people would buy Wiim if became Apple Music enabled and I'm not talking about AirPlay.

Talking about DACs, one DAC that I do appreciate a lot is the one Apple incorporated in their iPhone Touch Generation 4. It's kind of hard to explain but it is much more lively, dynamic and has better depth. Don't get me wrong, the Ultra sounds very good but I think there is something special about the way Apple incorporated the Wolfson WM8975 DAC in the iPod Touch Gen4. It's obviously not just about the DAC but how it has been implemented. Just to clarify, the EQ in my iPod has been switched off so no filters at all. When I have a little time in my hands, I want to experiment with the PEQ in the Ultra to see if I can tweak the Ultra to sound as close as possible to my iPod Touch Gen4. I'm hoping a senior Wiim engineer reads this and can locate a used iPod Touch Gen4 to put it to the test. It is important to mention that I am using a docking station with the 30-pin connector to connect the iPod to my preamp. The docking station station has unbalanced outputs (RCA), which allows me to connect it to the unbalanced (RCA) inputs on my preamp.

I'm more than familiar with the Cirrus DAC's in new iOS devices (I've had many of them) - but the spatial imaging of the old iTouch is magic - I don't think I could ever go back. I certainly didn't appreciate what I had at the time, and I'm very glad to have rediscovered it.

So my new (old) DAP is my 1st Gen iTouch running Whited00r 7. Bliss.

This is how almost all Spotify implementations work, and I wouldn't expect wiim to do anything different here.
Yes, I know some don't use spotify connect, but they are few and far between.

I have had my Wiim Ultra for a month now and I have to say it is probably one of the better products I have bought in recent years. I am completely new to Wiim so as a first product this has instantly hooked me into the brand.

My setup is rather straight forward:
2x Monitor Audio bookshelf speakers powered by an Audiolab 8300a stereo amplifier.
2x MinX subwoofers plugged into the Wiim Ultra (y-spliiter)
RCA connection from amp to Wiim Ultra.
Wiim Ultra HDMI connection to TV.

Everything so far has been flawless.

I'm slowly moving away from the Sonos ecosystem and will be looking at the Wiim amps down the line to replace my multi-room setups.

I understand and you have a good point there @Mr Ee. However, it would be fantastic to have all the streaming services including local resources in one place. Probably easier said than done but after my experience with Wiim, I think they have the talent to address it in the future.

I’ve never been a proponent of the WiiM Home app being the one and only, all singing all dancing app for all media sources for the simple fact that the APIs made available to third parties like WiiM are never as feature rich or kept as up-to-date as the separate media apps. I’m more of a supporter of Connect/casting mechanisms.

I initially bought a WiiM mini to see if I could get more use from my Sonos system
I plugged it into my 5s and was amazed how it worked, since then I bought an ultra plugged into my pair of 5s and sub and it just works
I have since ditched the paid for streaming services and have plugged a 2tb hard drive in and been adding all my cds to it and now my ultra is a music server, phono stage and radio tuner
Really happy with it as a product and the fact my Sonos gets more usage
