Question about Airplay support for WiiM Ultra by WiiM mini

This is sort of working.
If I open the Phone app, choose Home Music Share then the Media server and click Album, All Music, Artist or Genre it shows me stuff that is physically on my phone but if I click Folder (after a Rescan on the Desktop app) I can properly see and play what is on the Windows PC app but with no metadata or cover art in the playing window.
Not good enough WiiM
Who would use folder browsing anyway? 😉🤣

Im currently ripping a CD to the music folder on my Mac computer's main hard drive to see if there is a differenc

yes there is I just clicked it and now everything is working popular! This was the problem. I would have never solved this without you. Thank you.

I do have a question. Is there a way to set the artist image on the artist page? See attached screenshot.
If you are serious about this, and I think you are, then ditch the WiiM Desktop App and look at the following two pieces of Music Server software

Lyrion (LMS)
Minimserver

Minimserver is the go to UPnP Server that is heavily recommended here. If you want to solely play local music via the WiiM Phone App then start here.

Lyrion (LMS) is not a UPnP server. It uses a different protocol. As well as local music it has plugins for most Music Services (Spotify, Qobuz, Tidal etc), brilliant BBC Sounds and Radio Paradise plugins and great support for Internet radio generally. If you go this route then you only ever use the WiiM app to set up players.

Both can be run a Mac although long term many people would recommend running on a 24/7 Raspberry Pi which is no longer reliant on the Mac being switched on permanently.

The first win is getting the WiiM desktop app to work. Yay! Lol

I did download minimsever. However how do I access it on my phone to play music on the ultra?

I figured it out. I will be ripping my CDs and the files will appear in both the WiiM app and the Minimsever. I set it up.

I’m still wondering is there a way to set a photo for the artist themselves.

I shall leave that to @Burnside to answer in full but it probably won't run at the same time as the WiiM Desktop app as they do the same thing and will appear in the same place on the Phone app

Artist photos. Defintely yes in Lyrion but only 95% sure its yes in Minimserver. The Minimserver guru is @simbun

Yeah, this needs @simbun - I do have album covers appearing when I browse by artist, but forget which config parameter enabled that…
Plus I think you might need the paid version of Mininserver, rather than the free one, and perhaps a folder of artist images which you’ll need something to generate for you.

I really like my Raspberry Pi LMS setup and use it in conjunction with a WiiM device most days. If I have any reservation about LMS, it is that its open source nature, which is an advantage in so many ways, also means it’s dependent on a small number of enthusiastic and altruistic individuals to develop it and keep it current. Being unfunded and voluntary, there will rightly come a time when, for any reason, their contributions will diminish or stop (there is a recent example) and it is not obvious to me where their successors will come from. This in no way diminishes my gratitude for previous and currently ongoing achievements.

@buitbyty

Configured with the indexArtwork setting under serverOptions.

Yes it requires the licensed version and a folder (named indexArtwork) of artist images in the root of the content directory.

Jellyfin does a decent job scraping artist images, storing them one folder per artist e.g. /Artist/folder.jpg.
Given that MinimServer expects all artist images under a single root, there is some translation required.

This was helpful. What is the best way to use minimsever if I’m using a laptop and desktop in terms of licensing ?

You should only need one instance - say Desktop. Then laptop would conenct to that instance as would WiiM devices.

So if im understanding you correctly, in the music library folder I need to create a folder "indexArtwork" and save the artistname.jpg for their artist photo to show?

I have just installed the free version of MinimServer 2.2 on my Mac Studio, and it seems to be quite sufficient for my requirements.

I realise that this will only work whilst my computer is running, and I presume that it will start up again when I turn on my Mac each day, and will perform a rescan at each start up, is this correct?

The indexArtwork folder needs to be in the root of the path you specify in MinimServer (which is probably the root of your music library).
In you placed "The Rolling Stones.jpg" in this folder the image will appear in the Artist (AlbumArtist) and All Artists (Track Artist) index.

I know nothing about macOS so I have no idea if it'll start on boot, but MinimServer can be configured to scan on startup by setting:
Code:
startupScan: true
