Spotify connect issue

I've recently been experiencing an issue with spotify whereby my two wiim devices are defaulting to google cast rather than spotify connect (see attached). I don't have google cast enabled in the app for either device and have never intentionally used this connection option previously. The only workaround Ive found so far is to quit both apps and then turn wifi off and back on (sometimes need to do this twice) to get the spotify connect option to show and work again. Anyone else experienced this or have advice on how to fix it?

This is a known issue affecting some smartphones. After enabling Google Cast in the WiiM app, then please turn off "Allow Google Cast services." It might seem strange, but this should resolve the issue.

That seems to have worked, thanks! Very counter-intuitive though as you noted.

Ah ok, so not really a solution unfortunately. But yes, obviously, disabling it completely will prevent the Spotify app from using it as well.
Since Spotify made the change (deliberately, as they say) to no longer offer Spotify Connect on devices, which support Google Cast, only Spotify could provide a real solution.

Seems like NAD found a workaround for this, by 'advertising' different names for the Chromecast instance and the Spotify Connect instance.

It would be totally fine if Spotify over Chromecast supported CD quality/high-resolution...

I'm not sure if it's that easy. Google Cast and Spotify are a mess, each on their own. But when combined they are a mess of a mess.

My WiiM Amp Pro, WiiM Sound and WiiM Sound Lite are all "Google Cast enabled". The Amp Pro and the Sound are found by Google Home, the Sound Lite is not.

Admittedly, the Sound and the Sound Lite are currently running the Stereo Pair beta firmware and the Sound is the leader, but this shouldn't affect Google Cast at all.

Spotify detects
  • the Amp Pro as a Spotify Connect device, only
  • the Sound Lite as a Spotify Connect speaker, only
  • the Sound as a Spotify Connect speaker group (which is at least the expected result with WiiM groups, even if the Stereo Pairs is a special group) and as a single Google Cast speaker
It also detects a Google Cast group containing the Amp Pro as a member.

Why the differences? The Amp Pro is still running the old SDK (Cast-Firmware 1.56.x), but the Sound and the Sound Lite are both on the new "Google Cast for Audio" SDK (Cast-Firmware 1.68.x). I don't see a pattern.

It would be totally fine if Spotify over Chromecast supported CD quality/high-resolution...
And again, it would be Spotify's task to enable this. Google Cast is easily capable of 16 bit 44.1 kHz stereo streaming.

Gapless playback is also essential in my opinion!
It depends on the type of content you're interested in, but yes, for things like radio plays, many kinds of electronica and so on it's simply mandatory.

In my personal opinion Google Cast is the most useful "generic" protocol (even if it's proprietary) and often underrated when it comes to its technical capabilities. But OTOH Google Home is a real PITA and the lack of gapless makes it unusable in certain cases.
