What speakers do you use for your AMPlified Wiims?

I have a Wiim Amp Pro that I'm currently moving back and forth between the bedroom and living room. The speakers in the bedroom are 20+ YO Canton Ergo 22DC speakers set up on the night stands (like wearing headphones but I can roll over!). In the living room system I am using Quad ESL-63s (40+ YO and recently rebuilt) and an SVS 3000 Micro subwoofer with the Wiim Amp bass management configured as a crossover. I'm considering a Wiim Amp Ultra for the living room system so I don't have to keep moving the amp.


The Quads don't produce much in the way of low bass, and trying to produce low bass with them limits their SPL. The crossover in the Wiim Amp Pro keeps the low bass out of the Quads so they can play louder, and the subwoofer gives me the low bass that the Quads can't. The Quads were designed to be used with 50-100W amps, so the Wiim Amp Pro (and Ultra) is great for driving them.


The Canton Ergos take up a bit of space on the nightstands, but they sound quite good. I play recordings of crickets and tree frogs or quiet music when I go to bed. A sleep timer turns the system off after 45 minutes or so. I added a magnetic tape strip to the back of the remote control and stick it to the steel headboard so its always in easy reach to adjust volume or turn the system off.

by cutting so high, would deserve two very distinct subs in stereo mode not double mono..(and placed under the esl)... but you already know that I imagine ;-)

Yes, but Wiim has only 2.1 output... It still sounds quite good as-is. The nice thing about the crossover in the Wiim Amp Pro is the frequency can be set while listening to music. I have found just a couple pieces of music where I am able to localize the bass to the sub and moving the crossover frequency down fixes it.

Excellent stuff, especially Big Bad John. I found Bubbles a bit pointless but it had good sound anyway.
I was only listening into it on YT via bluetooth and yet, it goes to show that excellent recording comes before excellent reproduction.

For my desktop righ, I used to have Wiim Pro, connected to an SMSL M500 MKII DAC, to an SMSL A300 Amp powering QAcoustics 3030i.
The speakers, although bulky for a desktop rig, are chosen for its bass capabilities and its tweeter shortcomings was resolved by the ESS9038PRO DAC Chip.

Wifey gave ma a WiiM Amp Ultra for my birthday, and I decided to leverage its Subwoofer integration with an old Wharfedale Sub. It would have been great, except that the internal DAC can no longer cover for QA3030i's tweeter shortcomings. Unlike the external ESS9038PRO, Less detailed on the highs and no longer holographic. And the sub nullifies the pros of having a large bookshelf.

Having articulated my setup, can anyone share their speakers for their WiiMs, and help me with a good speaker pairing for WiiM Amp Ultra that already have a subwoofer? Ergo, emphasis now is for the mids and highs, and imaging. And perhaps one that is also good for near field listening.

I've also got q acoustics 3030i paired with my amp ultra and sub in my main living room system. I don't know what your budget is but I'm using Dali Spektor 2's for nearfield in my office system and would highly recommend them especially if your focus is on mids and highs. They image really well too and the tweeter has a wide dispersion, so doesn't necessarily have to be pointing directly at ear level. I don't use a sub in that system but they would pair very well with a sub according to lots of other reviews I’ve read.

If you’ve never had a sub in your setup, you might be surprised at what one will add, even with very nice speakers like yours. When I first started messing with my system and an older sub, I didn’t think it was doing anything … until I turned it off. It makes fair recordings sound good, and good recordings sound amazing.

TV: WiiM Amp, KEF Q150, Klipsch R-100SW sub

I didn’t mean to be a KEF fan, but the imaging of the cheap Q150 convinced me to jump straight to the R3 Meta. Been eyeing @EddNog’s MoFi Sourcepoint 8 though, so planning to put the R3 Meta on the TV system (and a better sub) and get the MoFi for my main listening room. Can’t pull that trigger just yet though.

Yes, I know what you're talking about, but it's only about square meters I can't stretch the room; it's not made of rubber. I also have a Samsung Q800 soundbar with rear speakers for the TV. A second subwoofer? My wife would kick me out Besides, for it to work well, I'd have to invest in a really good subwoofer. I tested the frequency response, and the Q750s reproduce 32Hz without a hitch. I know, the power would be impressive, but maybe someday the time will come to add another unit.
