WiiM Amp Ultra output level issue

Which model Denon?
Fundamentally, the line level output of the turntable is too low for what the wiim expects as a line in.
Some amps only need a low signal level. The denon probably has an input sensitivity around 200mv whereas the wiim is seemingly much higher.
So "what's wrong" seems to be that these two devices aren't well matched because the phono output is quite weak and the wiim expects something much stronger, like a CD player outputting 2000mv (2v)

Sorry, my mistake: it’s selected as LINE. As it was with the denon. I’ve tried switching back do PHONO and I can only hear a very very low sound coming out of the speakers.
Line is what you need. The amp ultra doesn't have phono inputs, it has line inputs.

How come they aren’t well matched ? They are both modern equipments … the wiim has a line in / phono input for analog sound.

I don’t understand… my turntable is very good and it worked perfectly well with my denom with 20y… and it’s a recent turntable, what’s wrong with this setup ?
Your previous amp probably didn't have an input sensitivity of 2V. You are not the first to complain about quiet vinyl playback. Even on an old school amp vinyl is generally quieter than other inputs.

Yep,
Input sensitivity / input impedance: 200 mV / 47 kΩ/kohms
And your turntable line out is, according to the picture earlier, 150mv.
i.e. the turntable is providing a signal that's reasonably close to what the denon expects as a maximum input, for want of a simple explanation, so it plays loud.
The wiim amp wants a much stronger signal, so the 150mv it's getting means it's quiet.

Solutions?
Maybe someone else has better suggestions, but either
A line level booster between the turntable line out and wiim amp line in.
A phono preamp with more gain / higher output voltage between the turntable phono out and wiim amp line in.

Either way, you get a new toy for xmas :)

I’m wondering if I should return it and buy an amplifier and a streaming box …

That would be a 20 dB difference, 10 of which can be compensated by pre-gain. Certainly not as loud as previously, but should be pretty loud at a volume setting of 100.

@sendas, which cartridge do you run with your AT-LP120-USB? Are you still using the original AT 95 E? This cart was very popular for almost 40 years, but its output voltage is at the low end of normal. Going with a higher output cartridge is another way of increasing the volume. Unfortunately, pick-ups with a noticeably higher output voltage are not that easy to find. An external phono pre-amp with higher gain (maybe combined with a new cartridge) looks like the best option to me.

For comparison: I'm currently running a Technics SL-40CBT equipped with an AT-VM95SH into the LINE input of the WiiM Amp Ultra. The Technics' built-in phono pre-amp has just 36.5 dB of gain. The AT-VM95SH has a nominal output voltage of 3,5 mV @ 1 kHz, 5 cm/sec (just like at VM95E). The Amp Ultra is driving a pair of Radiant Acoustics Clarity 6.2, which have a modest sensitivity of 85 dB @ 2,83 Vrms. I have set the pre-gain for the LINIE input to +7 dB and the listening experience is really, really loud with a volume setting of 80 with all but the lowest level records.

I still wonder if there's something else going wrong.

Definitely an option!
Is the Denon still around? Turntable line out to denon line in; denon tape out to wiim line in.
It’s still around; but I spent a fortune buying everything new, I don’t think it’s an option going back to a device that has more than 20 y … 😭

I was about to react to your post about the Eversolo Play being a better solution but your post got deleted. I agree with you in your situation. The built-in phono preamp has a good realworld gain: MM 60dB MC 74dB Input sensitivity: MM 5mV MC 0.5mV

The Amp Ultra should have had a phono input just as the Ultra does but with higher gain.

I deleted because I just thought it didn’t make sense… but you think it’s a better solution?

Do you meant do say: “The Amp Ultra should have a phono input just as the Eversolo does but with higher gain.” The eversolo has 2 separate inputs ..

Yes i think so.

I meant that the WiiM Amp Ultra has no phono input like the Wiim Ultra has. The Amp Ultra should have had it though in my opinion.
The Eversolo Play has a nice (high) gain on it's phono input.

Oh ok

So in theory the Eversolo Play will play better sound from the turntable right ? But I’ve seen comparisons between the 2 and the Wiim always win …

60dB is very high as you say, maybe too high. It would give an output of 2.5 volts for a 2.5mV input.

For your situation yes. You have a turntable with a fairly low output cartridge (2.5mV) and built-in preamp (in the turntable) with low gain (36dB) connected to the Amp Ultra line-inputs and that combination is not able to amplify the signal enough to reach "loud" levels. The reason has been explained already above by other forum members. The Eversolo has a high gain phono input that will fix that problem. Set your turntable to phono output (not line) and that's it.
