We don't know yet which cartridge is in use.
If it is an Audio-Technica AT95E then the
nominal output voltage is 3.5 mV @ 1 kHz 5 cm/sec. This is low, but not ultra low.
Also, 3.5 mV is
not the
maximum output voltage. It's a value measured at a defined reference point of a groove velocity of 5 cm/s. The maximum velocity when playing a real record can be much higher than that, easily up to 15 cm/s (even more with audiophile recordings). That means that the actual output voltage can easily exceed 10 mV, even with the weak AT95E.
A gain value between 36 dB and 44 dB is absolutely typical with MM phono pre-amps.
60 dB is far too high for any MM pickup. It's quite typical gain for MC pre-amps.
Let me repeat my setup:
- Cartridge with 3.5 mV nominal output
- Phono pre-amp with 36.5 dB of gain
- Pre-gain set to +7 dB
- Low sensitivity speakers
Sound is too loud for my neighbours (but I don't care too much) at a volume setting of 80. We couldn't talk if.you were in the same room with me. Normal listening between 50 and 60, clearly lower when having breakfast with the best wife of them all.
If the sound is not loud at all at volume 100 by any standard then there's something wrong with the setup.
