Me, as well as a few others have no issues with how HDMI CEC/ARC currently works. It would be nice to be able to maintain the current behaviour in case the new implementation is causing issues with particular TV models or use cases.

Your current HDMI CEC/ARC behavior will remain unchanged—this is the default mode.

For users who want more control, there will be an optional setting that adds advanced control features on top of the standard HDMI CEC/ARC functionality.

Once it's pushed, client side still needs to seek it. The automatic seek function is probably not live, so it only does it periodically, with an unknown frequency/schedule. Manually checking for the update may reveal something pushed from server side that your client side did not yet automatically find.

If the automatic seek function finds the update and downloads it to the Ultra, does it require the user to allow the firmware to be installed or is it automatically installed once it's been downloaded?

It doesn't get downloaded before you accept the update.

In certain cases critical firmware updates may be force pushed to th device, but this is not the standard case.

Unfortunately not true in my case the last 2 updates were automatically downloaded and installed on my ultra
And the latest mini update was just installed without any input on my part

I'm never happy allowing software or firmware updates to be installed as soon as they have been released. I like to hang back and see how it affects other users. If it's good for everyone else then I will update.

I did, I blocked all Internet access for the Ultra in my router. That won't suit many people who use music streaming services but as pretty much all my content is on a plex server or a USB ssd within my home network it doesn't inconvenience me. I will unblock it when this firmware update is sorted properly. When Wiim have to pull an update because of bugs, I'm not exactly filled with confidence. But having worked in IT for many years, I realise that firmware and software updates are always a potential cause of problems and not being amongst the first to try them out is a good strategy.

And, if I correctly understood, there is always the escape way of asking the team for a downgrade.

It's a bit tricky with a device like the WiiM streamers because there's also the client app. You'd want to keep both in sync or disable automatic updates on your phone as well.

I wonder what would happen if you unplugged it from the mains after delaying the update. Would it let you delay it again at the next power up?

I’ve been a long time proponent of opt-in FW updates. @WiiM Team should consider it. Maybe @RyanWithWiiM can influence this.

My experience so far is that the 2 most recent Ultra updates were 'forced' on me without my specific request.
That is, having read that an update was available, I pressed the 'Search for update' button (or whatever it is titled) only to be informed that no update was available. Fine, I thought, so I waited some 2 to 4 days but found that the updates appeared with no further intervention on my part.
Now, at present I have no issue with this - it's only music after all - but I do sympathise with @CliffyBC and understand his caution about not being an early uptaker for IT software.
What is the function of the 'search for update' button if it provides no clear information about the availability of an issued update, and also no control over it's adoption? I would suggest that this is not the correct, professional, way to present updates to customers.
