The digital outputs make sense for sure on (ampless) Ultra since some people need an external DAC to provide balanced/XLR outputs if their power amps only have balanced inputs (they exist, for example like my Topping B200 monoblocs, or people running stereo amps in bridged mono mode with differential input like Schiit Vidars). That particular reason would not be a thing for Amp Ultra users given it has integrated power amp.

I thought perhaps someone might say that. ;)

For myself, I have my Ultra going into a power amp to power my speakers, but then I also have the optical out going into an external DAC/headphone amp. Could be done with the Amp Ultra's USB out, but if you're already using that with a USB drive you need to add a hub, and all of a sudden the whole idea of the simplicity of a one-box solution is negated. In addition, not all external digital devices have a USB in.

There may be other uses for the digital outs which I've not thought of, and I suppose that's the whole point about flexibility.

Query. When a firmware update is applied, does it wipe out currently playing and recently played lists? I keep finding when I go back to the Ultra, it has forgotten all that stuff, and I'm not clear why. Is it possible for firmware updates to preserve these things in some way?

A reboot used to clear the recently played list on the Ultra but this has been fixed lately. So it should be saved also on firmware update.

Update: My Ultra just updated and the recently played list is still there.

Power cycle your router, WiiM device and delete/re-install the WiiM Home app. If all that fails, raise a ticket to WiiM via the more/feedback section in the WiM Home app.
