Wiim Ultra oddities

Is it me or are this a correct design feature of the Ultra. When the device is off, why does it switch itself on when touched ? This is very annoying because if I want to reconfigure cables it means that I first need to unplug it from the mains . Standby mode on any devise should be a sufficient setting before unplugging cables safely

No product should be getting warm when in standby, what a ridiculous reply that you gave to the member that dared to question why the unit is getting warm when its supposedly off. Did you understand the question? The Ultra gets warm when it's off. That can only mean that it's drawing excessive power. The whole point of stand by is to reduce carbon footprint. I found these and other threads by asking google for power consumption spec info on the WiiM ultra. My Marantz PM6006 consumes 0.3w in standby mode, not even the L.E.D gets warm . I can't find any official data regarding the power consumption of the Ultra, but according to WiiM it should be on here somewhere. Hopefully not by getting crap from anothermember.

I bought a WiiM Ultra a month ago but used it for about 2 weeks. I put it into standby mode (form the remote control) and the screen goes blank. I have experiencing it coming all by itself - normally when I get up in the morning it has come about of standby overnight and the screen is on.

I have no idea what it triggering this - I have disabled the auto sensing of optical & HDMI, Line in and HDMI CEC (although HDMI is not used). The only thing I have connected it the USB to my AMPs build in Dac, bu there is no auto sense option for this.

Does anyone have any idea why the screen turning itself on?

.....and yes, I have a cat but the Wiim is inside a glass fronted cabinet so if the cat is able to open the door press the button and close the door again then I'll post it on youtube.
 
What your problem with the power button on the remote exactly? It does exactly what it's supposed to do: switch the Ultra on or put it in standby.

For the remote to remain functional at all times, the device needs to stay on in a low power mode.

If you're so keen on turning it off completely and make it cat-paw-proof, then just add a switch of some sorts?

As already discussed in other threads the WiiM devices do a regular reboot for clean up purposes. As far as I remember it is every 3 days, if the WiiM has been idle for some time.

There is however an issue with the WiiM Ultra as it forgets that the screen was off. The reason is probably that the power off on the remote just puts it in standby with screen off. There is no real OFF.

You should discipline your cat to stay away from your Ultra. The whole purpose of a touch screen is to react to being touched, the clue is in the name ‘touch screen’.

No need to roast some users thoughts. The best thing about wiim devices is that devs read the forum from time to time and accept our statements. I can understand the need of blocking wake up just by pressing the screen. I dont have a cat but a couple of twins that love touching screens. So adding an option to kind of lock wakeup or even the touchscreen can be useful. Its not my first thing on the list but it caught my attention. I guess that everyone has their own priority when it comes to adding new features. RC, VU meters, a tv app… or locking the screen for super duper smart cats or clumsy toddlers

I understand what you are saying and I don't mean to disagree or criticize, but is a screen lock really enough?

As has already been said, it is safer and easier to unplug the power cable or use a smart plug. This will also allow you to lock the volume knob and remote control. And it also avoids the risk of children or animals chewing on the power cable and electrocuting themselves.

My dog chewed on a cable when she was very young and got an electric shock. This is not the fault of the manufacturer for not making a sturdy cable. It was my fault.

I totally agree, its not Wiims fault. But it is quite easy to allow customization of how you want the ultra to wake up. Touchscreen, knob, remote. I dont have an issue as is now but I can understand that somebody requests it. Just let them bring it to the table and let the devs decide whether it makes sense or not and what priority it has in the to do list

Perhaps you misunderstand what I have written. First you need to understand that all digital devices should be off or in a safe standby mode when removing any of the cables. This includes the power chord. Usually all HIFI components in standby mode will isolate the rear panel. As explained I thought my device was in a safe standby mode. Then to my surprise I discovered it was on. If I had been plugging an HDMI cable into the device, this could have caused internal damage to the port. This basic knowledge is easily found on the internet. The instructions in the manual to set up the devise is contrary to what is a safe power up procedure. The main power chord should not be live when being plugged in device. Nowhere have I said that a screen lock is needed, you interpret it as that. I have written that the screen should also power it off, I have also said that the device should stay off until intentionally required to be on The product could do what I thought would happen when the control knob is depressed. like unlock the screen perhaps? Had I known that the device is screen activated I would have made sure that I didn't touch it. when unplugging any cables. Having subsequently found out that the device is designed to stay on is not a problem. The problem is that nowhere in the manual does it tell the user that the device remains on at all times. I found this out by accident. This is my first streamer, apparently, they all work in the same way. Have you read the manual thoroughly? Pages 2 and 35 look to be the same in both English and Japanese. At this stage all that is needed to know about how to turn it on and off safely should be here. The device doesn't work without first installing the app, so why not include all functions on the app? I have re- read the manual over, the obvious fact that the touch screen will awake the device isn't written. There is nothing included about the screens functionality. Even the full manual on the app doesn't appear to explain the screens functionality if it does then please point to the page number. This device is being used in all sorts of different environments I don't sit at a computer desk with it at arms length, the app and the remote is all I need. So I thought I'd ask on the forum about the activation out of standby mode and guess what? I meet the same psychotic behavior that is found everywhere on social media.

I do agree that it's a good idea to turn all power off before changing cables, although modern always-on equipment often has protection circuits, they might not be foolproof.

I have all my AV equipment on a smart plug and turn all of before doing anything.

You a moderator ? Telling me to discipline a cat? I know its a touch screen. The clue here is that you are yet another sarcastic and sanctimonious school teacher. PUT IT IN THE INSTRUCTION MANUAL THEN EVERYBODY KNOWS

Its always a good idea to do a bit of research before buying equipment. If a power switch was a must, then there are streamers in the market that have a switch. You can kindly ask the Wiim team and the forum users if a feature that you are missing is useful and can be included in future firmware updates. So don’t get upset and raise a ticket through the app
