With the option of digital inputs which will allow even a WiiM Mini to benefit from the vibelink’s better DAC :)

Like terms such as bit perfection, I think sticking to rigid definitions of power amps etc isn’t as important as the benefits that the vibelink can bring to a range of streamers :)
That's kind of my thinking, pair it with a mini connected via S/PDIF. Obvious fit aesthetically with the Ultra, but that set up means you're paying for an extra DAC and volume control that wouldn't likely be used.

The DAC is technically an upgrade even for Ultra owners.

ES9039Q2M in the VibeLink vs ES9038Q2M in the Ultra.

Yeah, without having listened, no idea if that is a significant upgrade or something my flawed ears wouldn't be able to detect. Thinking I may grab one to pair with a mini in a satellite room, and once it's in the house I can do my own test without worrying about paying for a redundant DAC if I don't perceive a difference.

Let's say you had two swatches of material for furniture, or for paint colours, as you're going to be redecorating your room. And they're both a particular shade of turquoise, to the extent that they might actually be identical. What would you do?

Would you put one up on the wall where you can see it every day as you walked in and out of the room, then swap it for the other after a fortnight, and live with the other in the same way for two more weeks, then make a choice based on your memory?

Or would you just put the two of them next to each other?
I think you could make a case that testing audio equipment that way is more like living in a room where the entire room was painted one color, then repainting that room entirely with another color. I'm not dismissing straight A/B tests. But they're likely just that, tests, and not how I normally listen. To me they are analogous to comparing swatches, while extended listening comparisons can be a better approximation of what it will be like living with a sound/color on an extended basis.

Erm…I do. 🤷‍♂️

If you do an A/B test and give them identical, how could you possibly be satisfied with one after a fortnight, but then dissatisfied with the other, identical thing.

The one thing you could do. Listen over a fortnight, and find what you think is better about one than the other. Then do a blind A/B test and see if you can identify that difference.

If you can’t, that’s just your brain tricking you.
The same way I could go on a first date with two different woman and find that I didn't have a preference, but after spending a lot of time with both I clearly favor one over the other. Something that goes barely or completely unnoticed on that first date, in an environment very different from how I normally socialize and live, could become either very endearing or very annoying over time. Not everything reveals itself in a very limited sample size.

So A/B testing is more like speed dating then 😃

The mini doesn't have a trigger out so If the vibelink will be 'hidden' away at all and the right rear (as you look at it front on) is not easily accessibly then turning the vibelink on may be problematic.

Good to note. I don't think it would be an issue where I'm thinking of placing it. Nobody puts Vibelink in a corner.
