Hi guys,

Looks like audiolab 7000a and Wiim ultra has the same Dac ES9038Q2M.

What is the best way to connect Wiim ultra to the amp for better quality ?

Should I get pro or ultra ? For me looks like main difference between pro and ultra will be screen , because dac in my audiolab is the same as in ultra and I can use it.
And if I am right , so how I can connect amp to Wiim pro for the best sound quality?

Hi, I'm running a Pro+ into an Audiolab 7000A and have it connected via Optical and RCA so with the Amp's DAC and with the Wiim’s DAC respectively. I find it very hard, with my aging ears, to distinguish any difference between the two. If you don't need the screen or other inputs/outputs of the Ultra then the Pro fed into the Amp via Optical or Coax would give you equally good sound quality IMHO.

Ultra has benefit of

ARC input
Screen
USB out/HD support
Internal PSU not needing a USB charger.
Metal body
Comes with remote

But
Pro is cheaper - by a lot if you just get the Pro, you could buy three Pros for the price of one Ultra
Has airplay support

So optical connection - amp dac
RCA or coaxial connection - Wiim dac ?

Does room correction feature work for both?

RCA connection (WiiM Ultra line out to 7000a line in): WiiM Ultra DAC

Coaxial connection (WiiM Ultra coax out to 7000a coax in): 7000a DAC, just as TOSLINK.
Little Late here, but i have the same Setup (WiiM Ultra + 7000a), does it makes any difference to connect the RCA from the WiiM to the Power input of the 7000a, over connecting to one of the AUX Inputs?
I prefer the Ultra's implementation of the DAC, sounds more Dynamic and with better Separation for me.

Two options

1) Sent L/R pre out variable from a pre amp into power amp section of a integrated, or into a poweramp. Make sure you enable variable output on the output, otherwise you'll blow your speakers
2) Send L/R fixed output from your source into the integrated amp line level input.

Ok, i think i am doing it right then.
I have put the 7000a in Pre-Power mode (No volume control in the 7000a) and send the signal form the Ultra thru RCA to the Power Input of the 7000a, so the volume is controled from the Ultra (or the TV thru CEC over the HDMI connected to the Ultra).
Thank you for the info!!

That's how I would do it.

Some prefer to have an additional "safety" analogue volume control on the 7000a, but I wouldn't even bother. My Ultra is directly connected to a pair of V3 Mono amplifiers and I have never had any issue with the digital volume control on the WiiM Ultra not working as expected.

I really don't like the idea of a software volume. One time at band camp I was playing music from my phone to my av pre amp, and the volume control on the phone adjusted the master volume on the av pre amp. I had the phone volume at 100. Rather than being the phone output as a source.

I don't use a phone as a source now.

That's why I explicitly stated that I'm running this combo for months now with not a single issue. And it's not just me using it, but the entire family.

Conclusion: I do like software volume control on the Ultra, I most definitely do. :)

Thanks! I was worried because it sounds really loud with the connection i am using. The Speakers reach 80db with the Ultra at 40 of Volume.
I normally listen at 65db more or less, so i keep the ultra at arround 30, other than that i have had no problems with volume control in the Ultra.
The 7000a is 70W in 8 ohm and my speakers are 75W 8 ohm (Klipsch 500M MK II) so i don't think there is any risk for the speakers.

You can reduce the output voltage of your WiiM Ultra from 2 Vrms to 1 Vrms. That should better suit the input sensitivity of the 7000a and let you use the volume control to the fullest.

This is a setting in the WiiM Home app, I think in Audio Output.

Thank you! That helped, also I limited the Max Volume to 80, just keep my ears safe 😅
