Ongoing Beta Beta Testing: Wireless Dolby 5.1 for WiiM Ultra

Personally, if I were looking for an AVR, I’d buy an AVR due to the support for a wide range of video and audio codecs.

If I already owned an Ultra or Amp Pro, I’d consider adding WiiM’s Dolby digital feature for occasional watching of movies.

Another option might be to use an AVR and feed its rear output into a WiiM Pro (or even a Mini), and group that with a WiiM Amp (or Amp Pro) for the rear surround so you can get wireless connection to rear speakers and arguably get the best of both worlds. When not in use for the back speakers, the front Pro could feed into the AVR for stereo playback of all the music services it supports.
Thank you.

I'll give it some more thought as I'd like to keep the system simple due to installation space issues.

just picked up a s/h Marantz AVR for a great price so am going to look at using WIIM units to drive the rears - assume I'll need a WIIM Pro plugged into the AVR and a WIIM Amp as a minimum or will a Mini be enough to connect to the rear Amp and speakers

A Mini isn’t supported for the rears. Checkout the faq

I know it’s not supported re. driving the rears in the WIIM 5.1 set up - I wasn’t sure if it was the same if the AVR is doing the decoding

Apologies, I misread your question. If you’re just wanting the Mini to accept the rear speaker audio into its 3.5mm aux input and then group that with an amp to feed the rear speakers, yes that should be ok. If you already have a Mini, then use that but if you don’t I’d maybe wait for a sale and get a Pro from the point of view of better connectivity and features, even though you may not need all that initially.

Is it possible to output rear (surround) channels via analog rca outputs or maybe via coaxial/optical out? This will not require another wiim device - only long enough cable)
Is this feature considered?

No , you need a Wiim pro , pro+ or WiiM amp for the surround channels .

I use Ultra with Ethernet as master , and the Wiim pro wireless for both surround speakers

I understand that this is not an option at the moment
But maybe it is technically possible to implement in future updates
Btw wiim team said that there will be option to connect dedicated center channel speaker and I doubt that it will require one more wiim device - somehow it should use one of existing ultra outputs

The ability to use more than one output has been asked for for a long time with no outcome. I’d rather put faith in WiiM implementing the centre channel with another WiiM device in the 5.1 “group”.

Look forward to trying this out soon. Have an ultra, pro and amp setup for my backyard. Getting my tv installed soon.

I am very curious about this. It seems like it has so much potential. You could use a dedicated power amp for the front and backstage. You could use parametric EQ to match different speakers . Is there some type of built-in distance and level matching

If you have a WiiM Ultra and a WiiM pro, you can both do level matching AND delay .

If you, like me , have the power amp and the pro under the listening sofa, the rear channels are wireless because you can use the WiFi in the pro . You only need two cables from the power amp to the surround speakers.

This 4.1 option is like a TIDAL connect version where everything is wireless and the ultra and pro connect to each other wireless . It’s also like the Sonos version where you, in the app , can do volume control for all channels at the same time.

I use Ethernet for the Ultra and WiFi for the pro. No problem .
