I think that the error introduced by the mic being in the wrong position is not too bad in many typical setups. The further away the sub is from the baseline between the main speakers, the bigger the inaccuracy.

There's different time alignment features in the WiiM. One is for inter-unit/multi-room sync (which should use internal WiiM device mics) and the other is for subwoofer to mains (which should use mics in/attached to the controlling smart phone/tablet).

If done rightfully time alignment between main speakers and sub is a huge upgrade in overall sound quality.

It definitely affects the crossover region when you check it with REW.

Yes, and with the WiiM subwoofer management we can adjust delay down to the precision of on millisecond or 34 cm, not more.

Yes…this is why I ended up buying a second miniDSP (RCA outputs, no DIRAC) that I connected to the second output of my primary miniDSP (digital outputs, DIRAC Live license), because I was not happy with how it was working out using the WiiM Ultra to integrate the big sub with the rest of the system.

Regarding the necessity for accuracy in delay.

Imagine, if you will, someone with a stereo pair of full range floorstanding speakers. They're 2.5m apart, and the prime seating position/'sweet spot' is on a sofa, where the centre is 2.5m from each speaker.

Now, the listener puts on a recording of full range music, recorded in mono. And sits on the sofa, but right to one side.

We now have a delay across all frequencies (including those which would be handled by a sub if the speakers weren't full range) from one speaker to the other.

Is the listening experience ruined or damaged in the way some would have you believe, when discussing this topic?

Note that many recording and mixing studios have full range speakers and often more than one person working, none of them necessarily sat in the sweet spot.

I'm not saying we shouldn't try to be as accurate as possible. Given that the WiiM clearly has (theoretically at least) everything needed already built in, I see no reason not to go for the most accurate delay settings possible. It costs nothing and would require no greater inconvenience for the end user.

But I think we need to maintain a degree of proportion about any real-world audible improvements which might be possible.

From the reply above it seems the sub does not have a microphone, implying (automated) time alignment can only be done when used with another wiim device.
Actually, the sub does have its own mic, most likely used for the same purposes as the mic on other WiiM devices. It's located just below the front port.

As you say, this looks like a mic hole 😄
