Loud Popping Sounds With External DAC When Sample Rate Changes or Wakes from Standby – Anyone Else?

Keyword, if they could.
My point is that WiiM would do something if it were within their area of control. If the issue is external to the WiiM device, the best they can do is try to mitigate the impact, but ultimately the responsibility would lie with the external device manufacturer

Those pops (starting/waking) are really annoying. Wiim Ultra > USB > Fosi ZD3. Been searching for potential ground loops. Nothing is grounded…still pops. Interference? Sorting cables left and right doesn’t change a thing. Lack of grounding? Tested all in same power strip. Seperate power outlets.
Latest firmware 1.08 loaded to ZD3 did nothing for me. Same goes with fixed output from Wiim. Cannot get dedicated mains to this apartment. No pops using DAC connected to Macbook.
And no more ideas at this point using USB from Wiim Ultra.
Will not be buying a DDC just yet and forget about going with USB.

This don't sound like a electrical issue but rather an issue with the logical USB interface and the way the initial negotiation between the devices is done.

The sample rate is one of the parameters that is exchanged. This may be handled differently by different implementations of the converters resulting in popping at startup.

Have you tried using coax or optical between your Ultra and Fosi ZD3, instead of USB?

Your Fosi should accepts coax or optical as well.

In the Wiim App: Settings, Audio Output, choose optical or coax. For these 2 Wiim Ultra outputs you can set / increase Sample rate Switch latency. For USB this setting it's not (!) available.

Increasing sample a bit did the job for me. No more clicks and pops. Play with the slider until pop clicks disappear at startup or switching between tracks etc.

Here:

This was added recently for usb, but it's in a different screen as it's dac specific.

Yes. I have played around with toslink and these settings, thank you. Works nice.
The quest with USB to ZD3 goes on for the sake of eliminating the internal clock of Wiim Ultra.

I think it also could be an internal electrical issue as pops has different loudness. Same sample rate exchange. But loudness often correlates to amplifier volume setting.

Why? There is no issue with that.
There are different opinions regarding this. I have not come to my own conclusion yet. But others seems to think Wiim Ultra does not have an good enough internal clock.
Others say an external DAC is useless since the Wiim Ultra DAC has such great measurements.

Internal clock used for optical or coax output is not directly related to the WiiM Ultra DAC performance. It's about how much jitter that is in the signal and that has been measured to be very low.

Unfortunately is this issue still prevalent. I've tried different DACs, lastly a Topping E70 Velvet connected via USB Out from Wiim Ultra.
Everything is set to fixed output resolution. Still clicks/statics when changing songs via inputs through Ethernet, Optical or Line In. Definitely a Wiim Ultra USB Out problem here that seem difficult or impossible to fix. I had to go back to using Optical Out and set a latency switch to approx. 1100ms. That works fine but I will definitely replace the Ultra in the not too distant future.

Yeah i find that the big disadvantage of wiim. Yes they do software updates but if you make it right in the first place this isnt needed. Even when i have no external dac attached i still get this static pop when switching inputs. It sounds like it might damage the speaker and i dont like it one bit. Might also sell this and get a reliable brand.

Hi mrroyal88,

Could you submit a ticket from the WiiM Home App so we can check the static pop issue for you? Thank you for your patience and support!
