From the Amazon listing - "cast directly via ... DLNA". Interesting that they market that given the current state of DLNA casting.

I don’t think they’re saying that, just that it’s a DLNA target like Roon & LMS etc that they also list. By your interpretation it could also be read that it casts using the Connect protocols mentioned which we know WiiM devices don’t - they’re primarily receivers, not transmitters of those protocols.

Understood. I am just commenting that they are marketing something that is somewhat of a sore spot with some current users.

I don’t think they’re advertising the DLNA cast feature that the WiiM Ultra has (I.e. transmitting audio to other DLNA devices) just that it can act as a DLNA player

That is not what I said. My point is that DLNA casting is a sore point with Wiim users, nothing more.

Fair enough, but you brought it up in the context of marketing the WiiM Sound and I don’t believe the ad does that.

Would you elaborate on that please? I have no idea what you mean. I can cast (not stream)) via the DLNA protocol to WiiM devices w/o probs.

And I think the latter is what they’re advertising I.e. that you can cast DLNA to (not from) the speaker which it does like every other WiiM streaming device. However, I believe the ad has the potential to be misread as referring to the “DLNA cast” feature of the WiiM ultra which can also transmit to other DLNA devices and to be fair, isn’t without its problems.

Sorry for the confusion. I should have been more specific. I was referring to the marketing aspects of this advertisement, not the technical part of it.

From the technical perspective, Wiim certainly supports using DLNA to connect to their streamers. The problem is that Wiim has promised DLNA casting support from its streamers, but they only support that feature in the Ultra, and people have had problems with that. Some users are annoyed by the lack of DLNA casting support.

From a marketing perspective, I am an old marketing guy and I know I would have thought through the following scenario.

In marketing the DLNA feature for the Sound, Wiim has 2 groups of people who might react to the DLNA message - 1) people who want to use DLNA to use the speaker from a non-Wiim device and 2) Wiim users who are concerned about Wiim's problems with DLNA casting. By putting DLNA in the Sound advertising they have concluded that 1) is more important than 2). That is probably a fair assessment.

Personally I am both a 1) and a 2) person. So I have to weigh the positive nature of 1) and the negative nature of 2) in purchasing Wiim products.

Sorry for the confusion.

I couldn't find any mention of DLNA casting in Amazon's advertising. Are we discussing this particular sentence?

Open by design - Stream in the WiiM Home App or cast directly via Google Cast, Spotify/TIDAL/Qobuz Connect, Alexa Cast, DLNA, Roon/LMS; join WiiM, Google Cast, Alexa multi‑room groups.

I believe it's clear to anyone that this explains casting to WiiM Sound 🤔

Thank you for the explanation, @dtc .
But tbh I still don‘t understand the underlying problem. Maybe I‘m just daft.
Except for the case that a USB device is connected to a player and it is thus supposed to act as a server I fail to see why it should do so if the data source is located elsewhere. Let the receiving players connect to the source by themselves.

Please read my explanation of above - my comment was about marketing message not the technical capabilities.

No, because there is a fundemental difference between streaming and casting.

A stream is handled by the streamer (renderer, player, call it what you want). A cast on the other hand is handled by the casting unit. Close the playback application on the casting device and the cast will stop. A stream however will play as long as the server is avaiable.

Shortly after Sonos screwed up its app, Wiim announced that it would support DLNA casting. My belief, and others I believe, was that this was at least partially so that Wiim users could cast to Sonos speakers from Wiim streamers. This was before Wiim got into the speaker business as a direct competition to Sonos. Unfortunately, the DLNA casting feature has only been released on the Ultra and the beta testing has basically gone cold. The thought is that Wiim has pretty much stopped development of DLNA casting. Some of us would like to have that feature, both for connecting to Sonos speakers and to other DNA devices and speakers.

I believe the Amazon ad mentioned earlier clearly explains streaming and casting..

Sorry, but honestly I couldn't make head nor tail of what you were trying to say here. It may be my own lack of understanding, but I simply can't grasp why the topic of DLNA cast has arisen here.

I consider the WiiM Sound to be a speaker (an end-point output device), and it stands to reason that it lacks other output functions (including DLNA cast).
