WiiM Amp

How will room correction be implemented? Is there any information this future feature?
Nothing apart from they’re working on it and hope to have a beta ready by the end of January. No details on what it might entail or do.

This is purely a guess, but…

The microphone, room measurement, and design for either manual or automatic correction will be done in your phone. Remember just how powerful your phone is.

Once it’s decided on a solution, if it’s automatic, it’ll tell the WiiM what to do. The WiiM just has to apply eq, delay, etc. Do as it’s told.

Given that they’re talking about bringing room correction to all WiiM streamers, including the £80 Mini which was designed and made way before anyone started discussion the possibility of room correction, then surely this has to be the case.

I just can’t see a WiiM Mini having the processing power required to ‘do an audyssey’, but I’m happy to be corrected if I’m wrong.

I’m not sure if this is relevant, but the figures I’ve seen online suggest a Denon AVR-X3600H can process 1 billion operations per second. An iPhone 15Pro can process 35 trillion.

We’ve seen it in so many other areas - why buy what is effectively a new, expensive mini computer for each new household device, when you hold one in the palm of your hand already.

In effect doing what the HouseCurve app does?

I guess it will be something like that. The whole recording process and filter calculation would happen on the smartphone and the resulting PEQ parameters would be set into the device. 4-Band PEQ should be ok for basic room correction below 500 Hz. Let's see if they can increase the amount of filters.

Yes, that was my thinking.

The main difference is (as I understand it) HouseCurve requires a human interface between the app’s findings/suggestions, and the eq. So the app tells the human what needs applying, and the human inputs the settings suggested.

This would just cut out the middle man, and the app would alter the settings itself, though I presume there’d be a choice between automatic and manual.

I opened the package with the Amp from Audiotrade yesterday. Unfortunately, it is one of the batch with noisy PSU. Therefore I will return it to the distributor and hope to receive a silent replacement.

I have had the Wiim amp for a few days now – as I noted in an earlier post, they appeared in stock on Amazon.ca on January 3. (In any colour you wanted – as long as it was Space Gray.)

For you bug hunters – checking the API info indicates my unit is “PCB 5”. It has no hum or any noise whatsoever from the Amp. Top surface Temperature of the Amp is only a few degrees above ambient on standby. The highest top surface temp I have observed in use is about 35 C. i.e. it does not get any warmer than many other electrical components I have owned. I live in a dry, cold place where the static is real, but there have been no unpleasant shocks so far, for me or for the Amp.

Much has been made in the discussions of the Wiim streamers about the relative value of the “fixed volume” setting for bit perfect output – and yet the Wiim Amp version of the App has no “fixed volume” setting. So – is the assumption that, if no EQ is used, the streaming section of the Amp is always sending a bit perfect signal to the amplifier section?

This is the first PCB rev 5 I've seen! We've seen plenty of rev 2 and 4 with coil whine, so maybe PCB 5 is the fixed version!

How can I check it? How to do it correctly to check the revision of the PCB

My amplifier also noise from the housing, so I have to turn it off when I go to bed. But it was not bought from an official seller, but on a Chinese website. And now I don't know what to do

Bleeps? What is the interval? When does it do this? Are you sure it's not from your source? My WiiM Amp doesn't make any random noises.

I‘d say that’s not an unreasonable assumption to make, but how would you know one way or the other?

Yes, it's the PSU transformer coil whining.
My unit makes exactly the same noise, I opened a ticket, and Wiim acknowledged the issue and asked me to contact the seller to arrange an exchange
I also opened a ticket, and they also recognized the problem. They asked me to send the details and address, I sent them, but since then there has been silence. I've been waiting for an answer for the third day

Very nice amp, plenty of power, even had to set volume limit in case kids would like to play with the knob. Paired it with old Canton Quinto 520 and Canton AS25 sub, good combination. Sound profile is a little bit warmer and voice is a bit muddy compared to old Harman Kardon AVR2000, but everything is fixable through EQ to my likings. Doesn't get warm in idle, just a degree warmer than ambient temperature.

Remote controller is hit n miss, sometimes it works sometimes volume doesn't work on it, probably will be better after some updates in the future or not. But everything is comfortable and easy to use either with smartphone either with controller.

Got the same problem with buzz issue from device, but noticed only the next day when everybody was sleeping so I could really hear it from it pointing my ear, honestly I couldn't even know that it is there if not people from internet complaining about it (I believe number of faulty units are much worse, but people don't read all things in the internet and don't even notice that it has buzz because it is very silent). So I decided to open ticket, got quick reply from support with purchase and shipping details, I provided them and now it is also silence for the second day, but I can wait, since it doesn't ruin my experience with this great device. I just hope that I won't need to do return and only when they get it, test it and send another unit, which I believe will make me live without sound for a weeks or months.
