Wiim customers are turning into a tough market to please! Seems some are irritated that the Vibelink has a volume knob and digital inputs while on the other side they are annoyed that it doesn't have a sub out, ADC, autosensing inputs and so on. ;)
Tried to cover two product types with one, ended up with neither.

If the Vibelink fills a need for you then buy it and see if you like it. If you don’t like or need its features then move on to the MANY power amps to pair with your WiiM devices. Life’s too short to be complaining about this device especially given how affordable it is.

I believe WiiM's strengths are streaming and software. Outside these strengths, there are fierce competitions that WiiM may not be able to compete well. I rather like to see
  1. WiiM Ultra with higher quality ADC, DAC, DSP, and power supply
  2. WiiM Amp / Amp Pro with similar upgrades and higher power output or dual mono amp section
  3. Pure streamer version of WiiM Mini/Pro/Pro+

That leaves the possibility of accidentally setting your Ultra volume to 100% and blowing your speakers. At least the other way, you’d deliberately need to turn the vibelink’s volume up manually to do that.

If the Vibelink were a power amp without a volume control, how would that be any different?

CD, turntable and sub connected to Ultra. Digital connection (optical or coax) from Ultra into Vibelink. Speakers connected to the Vibelink.

Initially, turn the Vibelink volume right down and the ultra to 100%, then adjust the Vibelink volume to as loud as you’d ever play it and don’t touch its volume again after that. Then set the Ultra volume control back to a comfortable level and just use the Ultra’s volume control, bass management etc as usual going forward.
...or, turn the Ultra right down, the Vibe to full, then just turn the Ultra up until it's good.

All right, I keep seeing this… what’s the RIGHT answer?

If it were a power amp without volume control it’d always be at 100%. So if I had a typical power amp/preamp I’d run the risk of setting volume to 100% and blowing speakers? If not, how’s the Ultra different and can cause this?

But the vibelink isn’t a power amp without volume control, so my answer is more correct.

If I had a power amp without volume control, I’d take what steps I could to make sure that I wouldn’t run it at full pelt into my speakers because a) it might damage them, b) it might damage my hearing and c) I wouldn’t want to have perform CPR on my partner ;)

Well, clearly there is.

The point is, there are plenty of people out there with pre amps/streamers/DACs/Ultras/whatever and power amps with no volume control.

If it were really an issue, no one would buy such a set up.

What if you accidentally turn the volume all the way up? Yes, true. What if you accidently picked the amp up and dropped it on your foot? What if you accidently ate your WiiM Mini with a hollandaise sauce?

How on earth do you 'accidently' turn your Ultra to 100%? That surely has to be a conscious act. You'd have to do it while the amp was off, otherwise you'd notice the loud noise. Who sits with an Ultra on, power amp off, and decides they'll just accidentally on purpose turn the volume to 100%?

I appreciate your point, I just find it unlikely in the extreme, and easy to mitigate against.

Yeah, so you know those steps? Well, just take them.

BTW, on point a, you're probably covered by your house insurance. For point b, you probably have 5-10 seconds without damaging your hearing. For point c, just make sure your CPR training is up to date.

The Ultra isn't different. If someone wants to see the volume control as an extra safety measure, they can do. But to be clear, having the Vibe at 100% volume is exactly the same risk as using a power amp without a volume control. There is no extra/different risk.

In comment #128 above it was stated that “there is some Bluetooth connectivity that will allow the Vibelink to be connected with the WiiM app for occasional over the air updates. There's no streaming built into this, but it may allow for some basic diagnostics as well as updates. It's not in the app enabled currently, but looks to be a capability for the future”.

As a corollary, over on Reddit someone said “I saw it and held it at the recent Bristol Hifi show. Confused that the Ultra and Vibe both have volume controls. Was told that a pure 'Power amp' option will be added to the firmware and volume controlled by the Ultra and app will be coming in the very near future, perhaps by launch.”

So, given comment #128 suggests that OTA updates via Bluetooth might be possible in the future, it might therefore be able to accomplish the first part I.e allowing a “power amp option”, whatever that might actually mean.

However, given that answers from WiiM engineers to @RyanWithWiiM have said the vibelink won’t be getting a remote control, coupled with the apparent absence of any motorised volume control, I’d take the second part about app control of the vibelink’s volume also being delivered via an OTA update with a pinch of salt. But who knows?

The Ultra (and Pro) have options to deal with this via the Volume Limit setting or the Pre-Gain input setting. No real need to worry about blasting yourself if the volume knob is accidentally too high.

Just got my VibeLink hooked up. Initial observation (because I have to re-level my sub to match the speakers) is that the total gain of the VibeLink is WAY less than the total gain of SMSL D400 Pro plus SMSL PA200 (pair in bridged mono mode). Had to turn my sub way down.
