He makes a very good point about AirPlay being missing, and I imagine that many purchasers will be wondering why it isn't included.
To quote @RyanWithWiiM from Reddit: “I understand the desire to see AirPlay, but imagine the reaction if the WiiM Sound did not have AirPlay and the WiiM Sound Lite did. We'll continue to try working with Apple to bring AirPlay to future WiiM products.”

Whether that means they’re still knocking on Apple’s door or inside discussing it, I’ll leave that to WiiM to answer. Sounds like the former to me unfortunately, and doesn’t address current products that don’t have it.

I don't look on Reddit, so I hadn't seen that information before.

I find the WiiM Facebook groups to be quite hard work, but don't get much time to keep up with them all.
The WiiM official one isn’t too bad (I must say that as I’m a mod there ;) ), but the admin on the fanatics page is very slow at approving posts and, to my mind, doesn’t jump in enough to remove the more ascerbic posts. From what I see, he’s on his own and involved in a lot of other groups that seem clones of the WiiM group (fanatics this and fanatics that) so that might take up his time. Plus I’m not a fan of public group content appearing in my Facebook timeline that friends and family can see - they already know how geekish I can be 🤣

It exists as a means to 'make' money (even though it consistently reports as running at a loss!) for the media conglomerate of Conde Nast. I guess moderation doesn't figure in their business plan 😜💰💰💰
Didn’t realise it was related to Conde Nast. It’s clearly the Nast( y ) bit ;)

I don’t like public groups, and try to avoid them, and the groups that I admin have all been made private, and prospective new members have to answer a question, and can only be approved by the admin.

Yeah, that’s how I did it on tne uk Alexa group. For some reason, some admins see that as more onerous than approving every post… 🤷‍♂️

Vebos are a company who make stands for lots of different smart speakers, and I have a couple for my RIVA speakers, and would recommend them.

They are based in the Netherlands, so they are readily available in the EU, and they are also available in the UK, but I'm not sure about the US.

Thank you. I checked their site, and they don't make any for the WiiM sound yet, but I was shocked at how many stands they do make

But ultimately, for reasons which have been long argued, and well-rehearsed, it will make no difference to sound quality, as AirPlay2 would revert (if it were included with the Sound) to lossy playback, be no better than vanilla bluetooth.

And just an opinion here. I think Smart Speakers are lifestyle products, rather than 'serious hi-fi'. Don't get me wrong, we want everything to sound as good as possible. But I don't think anyone buys a smart speaker because they think it'll sound as good as a streamer, amp and stereo speakers. They buy one because it looks less obtrusive, or in some cases is the only realistic WAF-related solution, to getting music in a particular environment (kitchen, minimalist loung, whatever), and then hope it gets as close to separates as is humanly possible.

In that scenario, to say not having AirPlay is a deal-breaker is just a little bit misplaced, in my opinion.

Indeed, given the initial point about AirPlay2 not being truly lossless, I think WiiM not having it on 'proper hi-fi' stereo products is pretty much an irrelevance, even without the caveats about expectations of a smart speaker's performance.

Not strictly true, as with a suitably configured Mac, even Apple Music can deliver lossless CD quality to an airplay 2 target. Same for Qobuz even from an iPhone. Plus Airplay 2 has the advantage of supporting a group of multiple target devices that bog standard Bluetooth doesn’t do.

Bluetooth is not a viable alternative to AirPlay, because it doesn't offer the ability to be used in multi-room playback like AirPlay does, and as that is my main use case, it has to be AirPlay.

100% it's like worrying about putting premium unleaded in a car that won't get anything out of it. Might as well put regular fuel (I didn't state specific octane numbers because apparently they are not rated the same way in Europe as here).

It's virtually impossible from a psychoacoustic standpoint to reliably pick out the difference in a blind A/B test of lossless AirPlay vs lossy AirPlay using speakers of the caliber of these things, sorry to say.

We still use octane numbers but I can't remember if they are still mentioned on the pumps. 95 and 97 are the common ones in the UK.

Here we have "Benzin Bleifrei 95" and 98. Diesel is a bit more diversified, but I never drove a truck or a combine harvester. So no clue 😉
