Can someone educate me on the silly question of why have a usb output? On an all in one? Usb input makes way more sense for another device to use the speakers but to just be an output my mind is struggling to see the use case.

I know it must be a pretty obvious reason and probably has merit but I'm curious as to what people actually use it for, the lack of usb input is a touch disappointing (very minor) just for the fact I plan to replace my very old setup in one room which is just an AVR with wiim mini and pc connected to it.
Just like the optical and coax digital output, the USB can be used to forward the audio streaming to an external device like a DAC, integrated amplifier or active speakers.

The WiiM have however not implemented audio streaming input on the USB, only on the optical input.

USB output can be used to connect headphones.
oh I feel a bit of an idiot that this didn't occur to me before... This might actually be a useful feature to me. Thanks for pointing this out!

My it's all around my desk (this is office/work/game area really), there are times I stream music during the day but fairly often it's a mixture between speakers and headphones, I end up just having the pc on playing audio to my setup when I could be using just the wiim in this case I think.

Only problem is my headphones setup is a schiit bifrost 2/64 DAC + topping A90, I already use the USB from pc to it so I presume it's simple enough to use a USB to spdif? From the amp ultra to my bifrost and happy days?
Sorry more thinking out loud rather than asking you specifically for advice now haha.

So as far as I can see the amp ultra does not have the spdif out so the solution for me in this specific use case of connecting to my headphones dac I would just pick up one of these
Usb a to spdif and that can connect to my DAC which achieves what I want of being able to stream to headphones without pc for those times I am not using it.

Perfect if so, I can see why usb out exists now, considering no spdif out specifically it makes sense!

Looking forward to this being available in the UK directly, I want to get rid of this massive ancient pioneer AVR that's served me well but I need the room!

Doesn't your DAC have a USB input?

The way that the Amp Ultra is presented in regards to the USB functionality is odd compared to its predecessors (Amp, Amp Pro) and sibling (Ultra). Each of those other WiiM devices support USB Storage Device Input as well as USB Audio Out. But (apparently) NOT the Amp Ultra.
The available material for the Amp Ultra fails to list any USB Storage Device Input support - why lose something already available on the other Devices and fully supported in the WiiM Firmware?? That the Amp Ultra supports USB Audio Out is something it shares with the Amp and Amp Pro - but while both of those are limited to Stereo UAC 2.0, the Amp Ultra specs specify "supports up to 8-channel 24-bit/192kHz; UAC 2.0 compliant" (even though the same specsheet advises nothing else multichannel except Dolby 5.1 input via ARC).
Somebody has some explaining to do...

I have tested the Amp Ultra with an SSD connected to USB and it works just as well as the Ultra or any other Amp.

Probably just bad marketing. The WiiM documentation is a bit sloppy in general.
