WiiM Ultra Firmware v5.2.708441 - Feb 22, 2025

Thanks. I was leaning towards this answer myself too, but then remembered that USB is two way communication and started thinking what if maybe..))
I see what you are saying as I thought if you sent a digital signal to the ultra and didn't use the line out it would bypass the wiim dac. You could raise a ticket with wiim as this info would possibly be useful. You raise a good point.

But the sub output is analog and the sub is connected to the WiiM, so any signal being output as analogue from the WiiM must have gone thru a digital to analog conversion

Oh! I agree with what you are saying., but if you were to use usb as an input it would also feed the dac on the wiim. I just wondered if there could possibly be a two way communication through the USB back to the wiim.

What do you mean by "use USB as an input"? The only way to do that is by plugging a USB drive in to the Ultra.

Sorry, I will be the first to admit my knowledge of the wiim ecosystem is limited. I had thought that you could use the USB as an input. I had thought this as in the manual for the wiim ultra it states that you can use a USB hub to allow USB out and USB in simultaneously.

Yeah, usb media input, not usb audio input

Yes. My point is that when adding an external DAC you want to get sonic improvements in the lower frequencies as well…

In which case, you’d need the sub attached to the device the external DAC connected to if that’s where you believe you might perceive a difference.

Yes, but unfortunately my DAC does not have a dedicated sub out and my amp has a pre out which in theory I could use but in that case I will have to turn off the crossover in the Wiim Ultra and my speakers will be running full range, instead of concentrating on the frequencies above the crossover point…

What do you think matters most below say 100 Hz? DAC performance or acoustical performance?
Of course what matters the most in the end is acoustical performance)) but in order to achieve that performance we do all sorts tweaks like upgrading a DAC, or adding a subwoofer and so on..

Basically, all wiim devices can be connected to external dac which is plus. Sound is subjective and I like my music that has huge soundstage. I sometimes add dsp to even produce a monumental soundstage.

I've been playing around with such things for about 15 years, and I'm quite firm in my opinion that you'll get better results with your preferred DAC and the Ultra sub out to your subwoofer set up with a good crossover point and room correction than with your preferred DAC running your speakers full range, room correction or not.

According to VU enough would be to add to already existing meter 2 filters: negation and colorisation (I tried to create some example on my phone but its not simple work on layers and I have no time but I tried :D).
Then user can selected colour to selected. Not sure if such feature is possible in Wiim ultra but why not?
And I hope it will show preamp values... It is even more important to me for now :)

Ah and seletcitn which screen is assigned to each profile. VU is the only interesting option for input from CD.
