WiiM Ultra Firmware v5.2.634663 - Nov 5, 2024

Actually I think people should stop doing that. :)

The rollout process is no different from Android firmware updates or even just Google Play app updates. You get it when you get it. So what? :D
Does anyone get it in the first day or so? We only assume it is staggered, we don't know šŸ˜ƒ

Everyone should post when they receive the update. For the last Amp update there were a lot of posts in a short time period saying the update had arrived but none before that.
I think atlist by tomorrow or the second day which I get my update.

I often get the impression there can be a day or two delay before the majority of people get it. Perhaps they release it to a subset and then give it a day or two before opening the floodgates in case there are any major issues in the initial rollout.

But weā€™re really all guessing ;)

I got the Amp Pro update just one day later (not even taking into account that release dates might not be in UTC). But what's the point in counting the number of days?

Does anyone use it?

Yes, me. Well, more 'used' than 'use'.

When I first decided/discovered I could rip my huge CD collection to a CD, I stuck a disc in the drive, WMP opened, and I had the choice of many formats, of which WMA Lossless was one.

A few years later I found a lot of unmitigated snobbery, much of which I still don't really understand, but that's for another discussion.

The bottom line is, you get loads of people with PCs, the free media player with most of them is WMP, and the default lossless format is WMA Lossless.

As it turns out, I've only recently started to convert it all to FLAC, but frankly it's not much more than the most minor of pains.

With this update, I needn't have bothered. But on the other hand, it's made me look at my whole folder structure, etc., again and that's actually been more help than harm.

And, let's face it, we all love to tweak...

Minority does but flac is what most people use. Wiim like to give its users a choice of features they want. Auto timing has been release and wiim is not done refining rc. Independent peq rc, auto level and multiple sweep will further refine rc. Are you ready on next beta maybe call auto level?

Yes, I think a lot of that is down to b-sider exclusivity at a particular point in the past, which made FLAC the default option.

Ultimately, lossless is lossless, and the only real differences are file size and the number of devices supporting each format; something which only really became an issue after many early adopters started ripping.

As I say, it's not so much of an issue now, as it's a pretty easy process to batch convert even a huge music library.

Bit by bit wiim will add more features. Feature updates is what set them apart from other brand. Most will give you update but that just bug fix. I like feature being added here and there but the best part itā€™s free.

Just for a bit of clarity. I seem to remember (and either my memory could be wrong, or it was just BS) that the biggest issue with WMA Lossless was that MS charged too much to licence chips/devices/whatever to use the format.

I'm dubious, though to be fair there are plenty of devices which can play vanilla WMA, but not the lossless version, so who knows.

Anyway, as such (and I'm thinking particularly about the whole AirPlay debacle) I'm surprised WiiM were able to, or felt there was enough demand to add the feature later on. My thinking was that either it was either just such a rare format there was no point, or that they weren't prepared to pay any extra to add such a rare format if there was a cost-implication. Maybe the whole licencing thing was all BS. Or was true at the time, but MS have dropped it; I'd opine a bit too late.

Far from it.

At least according to one person. :)

PS: And I meant the F in FLAC explains why WMA lossless has not become a popular choice ever.
